A Resident Assistant is to be in the Residence Hall or KE from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. an average of three nights per week, when scheduled. The purpose of on-in duty is to be actively available to the residents of the floor. This is to be facilitated by the following:
a. Be on your floor for the majority of on-in duty time.
b. Keep your room door open.
c. Make efforts to build relationships with residents by visiting various rooms.
d. Help maintain the study atmosphere.
e. Limit your own open-house guests and visitors.
The Residence Life Professional Staff member or Head Deskie will schedule on-in duty for the living area. When a Resident Assistant's name appears on the on-duty schedule, in addition to the above responsibilities, the Resident Assistant must:
a. Begin rounds at 8pm. RAs walk through the building at 8pm and 11pm on weeknights. On Friday and Saturday nights, RAs complete 3 sets of rounds: the first set is at 8pm, the second set is flexible and the final set of rounds is at 1am. Your supervisor will provide more detailed expectations.
b. During rounds, walk through all floors, basement rooms and lounge, and lobbies to ensure proper noise levels and acceptable conduct, to work at building relationships with residents, and to report maintenance problems.
c. During the final set of rounds, lock up the sundeck from both sides.
d. The Resident Assistants scheduled for on-in duty are responsible for deactivating the alarms if they are set off.
e. At the end of your on-in shift, fill out the rounds log as provided by your supervisor.
For special events, such as the fall staff overnight retreat, Resident Assistants may be asked to cover the on-in duty assignments for another residence hall. Apart from these events, Resident Assistants may not switch on-in duty with a person from another hall unless permission is obtained from the Area Coordinator or Resident Director. Permission will only be given for extenuating circumstances.
Do not make significant homework plans on the night of in-duty - this is one of the major commitments of being an RA; it can be fun! Enjoy your residents and the set aside opportunity to "hang out" with your community!
Sunday: Maintenance Issues. (Do a “service request” for items that need attention)
Monday: Advertise for an Event (weekly, tap-in, social event…)
Tuesday: Fridge Phantom (Throw away all scary-looking stuff from fridges in coffee kitchens. Wipe off CK tables. Report messy kitchens to RD).
1st and 3rd Tuesday of month – Men’s Side
2nd and 4th Tuesday of month – Women’s Side
Wednesday: Warning Notices:
Ask students to put things in room.
If student not present/ornery, place warning slip - item will be placed in trunk room on Friday.
Thursday: Open Trunk room, 8pm and greet Friday’s Students
Friday: Trunk room delivery (place all things in designated “must pay fine to retrieve” area)
Saturday: POOP! Pull off old posters.
Every rounds:
Build community
Stop by rooms, knock on closed doors, have short conversations with residents!
Uphold policy (open house, alcohol, noise).
Look for policy violations
Have discussions with residents who are in violation
Building Maintenance
Look for repairs/issues and submit a work order online after rounds
Report emergency maintenance issues immediately (call campus safety or RD on call).
Take down posters that are posted to lobby windows, etc.
Check the slot that’s secured to back of front desk door. If there are posters there, hang them.
Note minor incidents in google form “Rounds Log” (less than 10 minutes late on Open House, squirting water, minor sports in hall, etc.)
