Equation: a relation of two expressions showing they have the same value. Examples: 1/2 = 5/10, 2x+3 = 1
Inequality: a relation of two expressions showing they do not have the same value. Example: 2 < 9
Inverse Operations: a pair of operations that, when performed together, cause no change. Example: add 3, and subtract 3.
Like Terms: terms that have the same variables to the same powers
Properties of Equality: there are several! Of note to 7th grade math students are:
the Addition Property of Equality: If a = b, then a + c = b + c.
the Multiplication Property of Equality: If a = b, then a * c = b * c.
the Reflexive Property of Equality: a = a
the Symmetric Property of Equality: If a = b, then b = a.
the Transitive Property of Equality: If a = b, and b = c, then a = c.
Solution: a set of values for the variables that makes the relation (equation or inequality) true
