A young carer is classed by the NHS as anyone under the age of 18 who helps to look after a relative with a disability, mental health condition, or drug and alcohol problem. This help may include getting the cared for person dressed, fed, carry out cleaning and jobs around the home or help them move around. They may also help with siblings and offer emotional support. Many children don't realise they are carers and some become carers overnight due to circumstances beyond their control. It is important to recognise our young carers and the positive impact they have.
The facts and statistics below outline the number of children who have a caring role, as well as what constitutes a young carer.
Being a young carer is an important role. At Lodge Hill Primary we want to support the young carers in our school community. For more information on what constitutes a 'caring role,' click on the links at the top of the page. You will be be redirected to Carers Trust South East Wales where you can find information on agencies that can support your child, and financial grants.
If you feel your child takes on a caring role at home, please inform Mrs J. Saville (Head Teacher) on the contact details below. Information will be treated discreetly.
