GCSE Irish

Sudents who choose to study GCSE Irish build upon their aural, oral, comprehension and writing skills taught at KS3.

At St. Patrick's Grammar School all students sit CCEA examinations in Irish.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department facilitates and actively promotes our gifted and talented students to study more than one Modern Foreign Language at GCSE level.

Why study Irish at GCSE?

  • It’s the national language of Ireland.

  • It is spoken all over Ireland and in other parts of the world.

  • There are many jobs opportunities such as, translation, media, teaching and many more.

  • Irish now in the mass media age:

Irish language broadcasts can now be heard daily from radio stations such as Ráidió na Gaeltachta, and Ráidió na Life, (TG4),started broadcasting news, documentaries, children's shows and even soap operas as Ghaeilge.

CCEA GCSE Irish Contexts for Learning

There are three broad Contexts for Learning which are studied over the two year GCSE course.

Local, National, International and Global Areas of Interest

School life, Studies and the World of Work

GCSE Irish Examinations

There are four modules in the New GCSE Irish Specification which are all worth 25 % of each student's overall grade.

Resources

At GCSE level our students currently follow the Irish for CCEA GCSE textbook.. As the GCSE focuses heavily on grammar and structures additional materials are used alongside the textbook to prepare our students for examinations.
