More than half of EC3 learners are over the age of 31; though they can be as young as 11 years old. More than half are female. Nine percent are friends of other faiths. Non-English-speaking missionaries who use a native language on their missions are required to spend an hour a day studying English, so some learners are full-time missionaries. Though our learners come from all over the world and from all walks of life, they have characteristics in common. (Please do not share the data above.)
Employment: Learning English can have an enormous impact on a person's ability to get a job and earn a wage that supports the needs of their families.
Gospel Literacy: In some countries, scriptures and gospel materials aren't available in a learner's native language. Furthermore, some learners have never had the opportunity for education in their own country, and lack native literacy skills. Learning English will allow these individuals to read The Book of Mormon for the first time, and with an understanding of church materials, they can be more effective leaders and teachers.
Community Advocacy: Knowing English can help individuals advocate for their community. Issues and needs within the community are more likely to be heard and addressed by a wider audience when presented in a global language.
Time: Many learners juggle full-time work, family needs, and other responsibilities, making it challenging to carve out time for English practice.
No translation: Learners are being prepared to move to higher-level education, where English is the only language used, so EnglishConnect 3 is taught entirely in English without translation. Applicants are tested before they begin to ensure they have the language skills necessary to be successful, but the program is not easy.
Money: Local educational opportunities are often financially prohibitive. EnglishConnect 3 does have a registration fee, but it varies per country and is generally affordable.
Technology: Many learners lack adequate equipment. Where we would use a computer to take an online class, our learners are often limited to using a phone. Imagine taking a college course on your phone.
Infrastructure: In addition to using less effective equipment, many of our learners do not have reliable electricity or internet connections. Some even study by candlelight.
