WINTER Intramurals 4th-5th grade - BASKETBALL
Hi I am Mrs. Fries! I grew up in Louisville, Colorado with my twin sister and older brother. Growing up in Boulder County has ingrained in me a love for the outdoors and has influenced me to be active through all seasons of the year. I taught myself how to skateboard around age 12, which still continues to be a passion for me. I also really enjoy weight lifting, running, mountain biking and anything that has to do with a board!
After graduating from Monarch high school I went on to play basketball for Metropolitan State University of Denver. I received a Bachelors degree in Human Performance and Sport. A few years after graduating from college I started coaching basketball at Monarch high school. It was during my time coaching at MoHi that I realized my passion for teaching and wanted to make it my career. I went back to Metro state for a few more years to obtain my PE K-12 teaching license. I started teaching PE at Boulder High School in 2013. I created the first High School Skateboarding class in the Boulder Valley School District, which rolled out in 2017. In addition, I hold a master's degree in Sport Coaching from the University of Northern Colorado. It was always a desire to teach at the elementary level and when an opportunity arose during 2020 I was fortunate to start teaching at Bear Creek Elementary!
I currently reside in Louisville with my husband Tim, daughter Finnly (3rd grade) and son Hezekiah (kinder). You may see us running around town biking, skateboarding or scooting!
I believe my values have the greatest impact on my teaching philosophy….
Teaching to me is an opportunity to be a positive influence in a person’s life. It not only can help forward a child's hopes and aspirations for their future, but can increase their skill and knowledge health/wellness to help aid in a healthy lifestyle. Teaching can encourage respect, perseverance, positive social interaction and hard work. Being a teacher is a very rewarding opportunity for both the students and myself. My philosophy of teaching is very simple; put the student first. This sounds extremely simple, but it has a wealth of meaning.
Patience and faith stand at the top of my teaching pyramid of importance because to be a strong leader you must have a strong foundation. Servant leadership is listening, having empathy, awareness, conceptualization, foresight and stewardship. It’s a commitment to the growth of the student and building community. This means planning solid lesson plans, attending to the students needs, listening, giving advice, showing what it means to be healthy, demonstrating positive communication and clearly stating my expectations. Promoting a healthy lifestyle for the future is also a key concept to a good PE program.
I put students first and design my lessons around positive values, positive behavior and inclusive learning environments. I expect certain behaviors and personal responsibility in my physical education classes . I provide expectations at the beginning of the semester outlining to students what is appropriate behavior and what exactly I expected from them. In addition I pride myself in being a positive role model who is genuinely interested in the student’s well-being. As a teacher I demonstrate ethical conduct in all facets of our physical education department and school activities; making true and accurate statements, treating students with respect in a professional manner, taking responsibility for the student while under my supervision and providing a safe and fair learning environment
