Each team of judges should complete the following steps:
- Judge each project. Every project will be judged, even if there is only one project per category/division. Judges have 15 minutes to assess projects. Plan to spend about:
- 10 minutes talking to students about their projects
- 3 minutes conferring with your partner, assessing student work and jotting down helpful feedback
- 2 minutes summarizing your experience and sharing suggestions with students
- Introduce yourself to students. Remember that the students may be nervous presenting to adults. A friendly introduction will help them relax.
- Have students show you their project. They've worked hard to get to this point. Take interest in what they have done. We are looking for "kid work." It should be obvious that students did the work.
- Interview students. Asking them general questions about the project. Suggested questions for students include but are not limited to:
- How did you come up with the idea for this project?
- What does this project mean to you/your class/your school?
- Show/tell me how you...(edited this part, made this 3D, etc.)
- What software/app/site did you use for this project?
- What was the most difficult part of the project?
- What would you change about the project if you could?
- Use the rubric for each project. Both judges should take notes and make comments about student work as needed. Write your name on the rubric. These forms will not be given to the student but will inform your decision as to who deserves 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
- Complete a feedback form. As soon as interviews with students have concluded, each judge team works together to jot down helpful feedback one one form. Give the top copy of the form to students and keep the other with the project submission form. Be sure to give a feedback form to students before moving on to the next project. Students, their parents, and teachers expect to see some type of helpful feedback. Try to provide one suggestion for improvement.
- Select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. After you have viewed ALL of the projects for that category/division, look back over the rubrics and notes for each project. Use the information you have collected to help you decide upon 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The judge team will then complete the Judges Online Summary Form for that category located on the Judges’ Resource site which lists the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Remember: ties are not allowed.
- Complete the Technology Fair Feedback form. At the completion of judging all of your assigned projects for the day, please complete the Technology Fair Feedback form and return your packet to the Results Manager in the Media Center.
