I CAN explain why we need a government and describe the responsibilities of Alberta’s provincial government.
There are a number of bizarre laws that have been established. Your task is to search up crazy laws that may or may not be current.
For example
No Domestic Rats in Alberta: In Alberta, a person cannot own, buy or sell a domestic rat.
Share your laws on a sticky note. Feel free to find more than one.

Respond to the following questions:
Why did people have different points of view about the fixed link?
How would you decide what to do if you were Premier Ghiz?
To put it into perspective, the following shows a breakdown of the people on PEI who voted and what they chose to vote for.
Act - a bill that has been passed
Bill - another name for a law
Cabinet minister - an elected representative who is in charge of government departments at the provincial or federal level
Ethical - conforming to acceptable standards of conduct
Provincial Government – the level of government that is responsible for governing a specific province, is responsible for passing laws, overseeing departments/committees, and is accountable to the people of that province.
Referendum - a vote on an issue or law proposed by the government.
Subsidies - funds provided by government agencies to those who participate in a program that offers assistance
What are some services the provincial government provides?
There are approximately 20 departments in the provincial government. Some of these departments work with the local and federal governments, in order to ensure that taxpayers in our community, province, and country are benefiting from the service. An example of one agency would be the Department of Highways. Each level of government has budgeted a certain amount of funds to maintain and build roads, for this service. Because some of these highways are being shared by both the province and the town or the province and the federal government, they need to work together to support this service.
Education
Funds are used to cover our teacher cost, developing curriculum, and addressing the special needs in a school. They distribute the money to the school boards who then send them to the individual schools.
Alberta Resources
The six natural resources in Alberta are:
mountains
lakes
rivers
fossil fuels
forests
agricultural land.
Answer this question:
Who is responsible for ensuring these resources are being manufactured, refined, and distributed in an ethical way?
The six natural resources in Alberta are:
mountains, lakes rivers, fossil fuels, forests and agricultural land.
Did you know????
Alberta was third in Canada for the volume of timber harvested (BC and Quebec were first and second).
The amount of provincial tax that people pay is based on how much money they may make.
Do you agree with this system? Explain your reasoning.
Why do all Alberta students learn from the same program of studies and write provincial achievement tests?
Does Everyone Pay the same Health Premium in Alberta?
The answer is NO. Some people with low income, such as seniors, receive the same amount of health care, but at a reduced cost. The money used to cover the extra cost is paid for by the Alberta government. This is called a subsidy. Without these subsidies, many families would not be able to have basic needs covered, such as glasses, dental, and prescriptions. However, those who do not qualify for a subsidy are able to purchase extra health insurance to help offset the expense.
There are many similarities between the passing of laws at the provincial level and the local level.
In this activity, you will be given a number of pieces of paper. The pieces of paper contain either the level of government (local or provincial), the service provided, and an explanation of the service. Your task is to sort the services and the explanations into either Local Government or Provincial Government.
For example, we learned in the last chapter that the local goverenmnt was responsible for Public Transit. You would sort it like this:
Local Government
Public Transit → Manage Buses, subways, and LRT
Form groups of 3 and see if you can sort them correctly.
