We have looked at the collective rights of the Indigenous people in Canada, in the last chapter.
Do you feel their collective rights are being impacted by immigration?
Discussion Strategy
Agreement Circle
Form in a large circle.
Think about the question, "Do you agree or disagree that the collective rights of indigenous Canadians are being impacted by immigration?"
Those in agreement move to the centre of the circle. Those who disagree stay on the outside.
You will be divided into groups with approximately equal numbers of agree vs. disagree.
Defend your position in your small groups.
Form the larger circle again.
Think about the question again. Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Move to the centre if you agree.
What changes happened over the course of the exercise? What prompted you to change your thinking/response?
Points to remember about the Collective Rights of Indigenous people:
Out of respect for the Indigenous people, as well as the basic rights and freedoms as Canadians the government:
should have to consult the Indigenous people when the government makes decisions that fundamentally shape the future of our country
is to continue to provide health care, education and employment supports

What are some of the challenges the Indigenous People face in attaining a higher level of education? Record responses below.
Based on results from the 2012 Indigenous Peoples Survey the following list indicates why Indigenous people may have difficulty gaining access to educational, training and employment opportunities because of:
Lack of confidence or preparedness
Cost
Personal/family responsibilities
Personal Health
Courses do not match needs
Time constraints
Not a personal priority
Connected to this is the lower numeracy and literacy rates among this population.
If our Indigenous population is not getting the education they need and that was guaranteed them, how might immigration impact their ability to get and hold a job?
If the government is focused more on immigration as a way to supply a more skilled and professional workforce, then they are neglecting the basic rights of our Indigenous population. This, in turn, will increase the demand on the nations social assistance programs, while not spending resources on helping those Canadian citizens who need it now.

Word clouds are pictures made from words we use most often. The more a word appears, the bigger it shows up! This helps us:
Spot important ideas quickly – We can easily see what topics stand out.
Think more deeply – We can ask why certain words are used a lot, and what that means.
Understand hard topics – Word clouds turn big or emotional ideas into something we can see and talk about.
Start good conversations – We can use word clouds to ask questions and share different points of view.
See everyone’s voice – If we all add ideas, we all get to be part of the final picture.
Learn new words – We notice and use important vocabulary related to the topic.
Canada is not consulting the Indigenous population when it makes decisions that impact the fundamental shape of Canada
More money is being spent on immigration instead of trying to help the current health, education and employment crisis amongst the Indigenous population
Because of the challenges of gaining an education and skills by the Indigenous people, the government must then seek these workers from outside the country
How does increasing immigration affect the collective rights of Aboriginal peoples in Canada, and what measures can be taken to address any potential impacts on their communities?
