The Phelps Mansion Museum utilizes and preserves its unique Victorian facility and collections to serve the public through regular tours, exhibits, and programs emphasizing local history, education, literature, art and music. A visit to the Phelps Mansion Museum includes a tour of the home of businessman and early Binghamton Mayor Sherman Phelps.
Built by noted architect Isaac G. Perry in 1870 for Sherman Phelps, and later used by the Monday Afternoon Club, this mansion has remained a focal point of Binghamton’s Historic Downtown for 145 years. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and later established under the NYS Board of Regents as a museum in 2005, the Phelps Mansion Museum is a dedicated historic house museum for the Gilded and Progressive Eras in Central New York.

Description: A visit to the Phelps Mansion Museum includes a tour of the home of businessman and early Binghamton Mayor Sherman Phelps. Learn about the part that Mr. Phelps and architect Isaac Perry played in the development of Binghamton. Students will be guided through the mansion, with emphasis upon its history, architecture and lifestyles of the 1870’s with optional interactive grade level appropriate activities. The visit may end with students singing vintage songs, playing period games, or experiencing toys and games of the Victorian era. Classes have the option of bringing a bag lunch to eat under the crystal chandelier in the ballroom. A teacher resource pack and a DVD of the interior of the mansion are available to teachers for a pre-visit preparation in the classroom.

Students will be guided through the mansion, with emphasis upon its history, architecture and lifestyles of the 1870’s with optional interactive workshops: 19th century inventions, the art of letter writing, using a mail order catalog from 1895 Montgomery Ward & Co Catalog, and learning 19th century parlor games. This program can be adjusted to accommodate the various grade levels. Classes have the option of bringing a bag lunch to eat under the crystal chandelier in the ballroom. A teacher’s resource pack and a DVD of the interior of the mansion are available to teachers for a pre-visit preparation in the classroom.
