Learning Intention
We are learning that elements contain only one type of atom. Compounds contain two or more elements chemically bonded together. Mixtures are not chemically bonded and can be separated using physical methods.
Success Criteria
I can describe the differences between elements, compounds and mixtures with an example for each type.
Metal alloys, are an example of a mixture of different metals. For example, stainless steel is an alloy containing iron, carbon, nickel and other materials in smaller quantities. 9-carat gold is gold mixed with copper, zinc, silver, and other metals in smaller quantities.
Plastics are another class of material that are mixtures of mostly non-metal elements and are large long-chain molecules called polymers.
