The Fertile Crescent refers to an ancient area of fertile land located between and around the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. This land is referred to by many as the "cradle of civilization" due to the arable soil superb for agriculture. By settling down in this area, ancient people were able to establish flourishing civilizations. This was because of the surplus of food and resources available from agriculture. Due to this development, many strong ancient civilizations such as Phoenicia, Hittites, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Ur, and Sumer developed in this area. These civilizations, specifically the Phoenicians and the Hittites, developed tools, ideas, and technology that advanced the ancient and modern world.
