Reading Workshop
The district provides our ELA curriculum including the Lucy Calkins Readers Workshop Framework. I believe a structured reading program with quality instruction involves many elements such as:
Individual and small group instruction
Selecting reading material that are “Just Right”
Explicit lessons on phonics, word skills, rules, decoding and fluency
Teacher read alouds for modeling fluency, expression, vocabulary, etc.
Reading comprehension strategies
Time in class for independent reading
Participate and respond to reading as a class or with partners
Discovering mentor texts supporting various genres of reading
Increase text complexity as students develop
Build academic language, improve vocabulary, and background knowledge
Making connections between to self, other books and the environment
Types of reading including read-to-self and partner reading
Assessment-based instruction including feedback tailored to students
Increasing motivation to read by giving students choice of high-interest and accessible books
Writing Workshop
Units include: personal narrative, opinion, nonfiction, and fiction writing
Children learn to plan, draft, revise, edit and publish in a variety of genres
Individual conferences with teacher about strengths and goals
Work on handwriting, spacing, correct use of capitals and punctuation
Focus on ideas, including more details, using interesting words
Use classroom reading material as models of what authors do
Re-read their writing and check that it makes sense
Presenting and sharing with others
Best attempts at spelling using Phonics rules and segmenting words into syllables and sounds
