Fulbright Czech Republic

Location: Třebíč, Czech Republic

Position: English Teaching Assistant

Description:I work in a specialized high school in the Czech Republic where I assist in English classrooms.  My main task is leading English conversations and providing pronunciation assistance from my experience as a native speaker.  I am also expected (and enjoy) participating in cultural activities/events in my town.  Often I attend these with students or other teachers. Some people in my position also run an after-school club or additional English lessons for non-English teachers in the school.

Language Requirement: No language requirement although having language experience is very helpful .

Language Use: My Czech language skills have been incredibly helpful.  Aside from the English teachers at my school none of the other teachers speak English.  Czech has been a great way to communicate (even a little) with my coworkers and students.  Additionally, I often use public transportation to travel, and I always use Czech to buy transportation tickets/navigate the transportation system.

Impact on Language Skills: My listening skills have greatly benefited.  I am also slowly becoming a more confident speaker.

Opportunity Found Through: Recommended by a professor

Paid: Yes

Application Process: Applied through Brown's fellowship office for the Fulbright program.  2 essays required and 3 letters of recommendation.  Later asked to submit a video questionnaire.
