This learning resource targeted at 6-7 year olds (Year 2 pupils) gets them to think about the role of insects in food chains through an investigation of compost. Group discussions are prompted with question cards that ask, for example: What would the compost be used for? What do you think would happen to the contents after a month? What would happen during different seasons?

The teacher training student who produced this primary school learning resource had no idea that her grandfather used to keep bees before she told him about her cultural placement at Cogges Manor Farm. She has used both her experiences at the farm museum and details passed on to her by her grandfather to create a wide variety of activities that focus on products that can be made from bee keeping. Included are many questions which aim to encourage pupils to share what they already know and think.
