Counselors at Bronxville High School are concerned with the intellectual, emotional and social development of all students. The counselors help students assume responsibility and develop self advocacy skills to achieve their potential, to participate fully in the school community, and to initiate planning for life beyond high school. Counselors help students resolve personal issues. Counselors are available for individual conferences with the student and/or parents
The counselors are well qualified to assist students in selecting a program of study best suited to their interests, abilities and goals and to help them make well-informed decisions regarding their future educational plans. They utilize available resources such as teacher recommendations, prior performance in a discipline and student interests, to help students understand options and clarify alternatives.
Counselors work closely with students and their parents, advising them on both academic and non-academic issues during scheduled annual family meetings as well as at conferences initiated by parents, students, teachers and/or counselors throughout the year. Counselors discuss the level of difficulty of courses and the sequence in which courses must or should be taken as well as alternative courses that may fulfill a student’s interests or goals. Counselors also work closely with teachers, administrators, curriculum leaders, or other support personnel regarding student concerns.
While final decisions on program and college plans rest with students and their families, the counselor can help to: evaluate the student's abilities, interests and achievements to enable him/her to be more aware of personal strengths, weaknesses and talents and help to recognize needs, gain self-direction and appreciate educational values. Counselors assist the student in organizing and directing efforts to take full advantage of the opportunities offered at Bronxville High School. Counselors help the student and family make appropriate and realistic choices to prepare a sequential educational plan in high school and beyond.
Counselors help the student consider colleges commensurate with his/her ability, interest, school record and other data and aid in all aspects of post high school planning.Helping students make well informed decisions and plan for the future is an important part of the counseling program. Conferences and group meetings are held at each grade level to supply appropriate and timely information.
