Have you ever wondered what the life of a Brockway student is like? Between taking advanced classes, studying so much your migraine seems lethal, and relaxing at lunch with your friends, Brockway Jr. Sr. High School offers many unbelievable opportunities and is sure to leave a huge impact your life.
Brockway is packed with large opportunities such as Dale Carnegie, Dual Enrollment, and Advanced Placement classes. These classes open a special door to one-of-a-kind opportunities to build up students resumes and experiences. Along with these classes, Brockway offers 86 scholarships to students throughout the year, including scholarships from the Brockway Schools and Community Education Foundation. These scholarships are easy to apply for and some offer a great amount of money, thus giving students a good start at college. There are also cyber classes.
“A lot of our students graduate from Brockway with their first year of college practically finished, thanks to our array of cyber classes, Dual Enrollment classes, and AP courses,” said Mrs. Kathy Knepp.
Many clubs in Brockway have started due to student interest, such as Chemistry Club.
“This club began about four years ago when two Brockway students approached me asking if I would be the advisor of a Chemistry Club,” Mr. Tim Chelednik said. “I think Chemistry club helps to increase the student's level of interest in the subject,” he added, “thus causing them to think more creatively.”
The school also offers a large amount of sports. This is something that is very rare for such a small school with about 400 students. The school offers sports like football, tennis, volleyball, baseball, skiing, snowboarding, soccer, baseball, track, basketball, and more. These sports offer students a chance to advance physically, express their unique abilities, and contribute to the team. Because a lot of the sports are scheduled throughout different times of the year, students often participate in more than one sport. Many of these student athletes also become a proud varsity student and earn their letter jackets.
Many of the students at Brockway have experience with agriculture. Because of this, there are many opportunities offered in the school that contribute to agriculture. FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. This organization at Brockway participates in many events such as the fruit sale, Farm Show, the Farmers Market, eighth grade presentations, breakfast for the teachers, Fruit and Vegetable Growers Meetings, and many more.
“I believe that these opportunities are beneficial for students and help them to become more involved,” said Mr. Kyle Norman. “The FFA helps prepare students for real-life scenarios, like how to take care of your dog when it gets sick, how to change a tire, how to plant a garden, and more.”
These are only a few of the opportunities that Brockway High School has to offer, and the list keeps growing.
