We are pleased to announce that our Year 8 students will participate in a "Taking a Stand" Speech House Competition in the penultimate week of this term. This event follows a Scheme of Learning this term, which focused on understanding and using rhetorical devices in speech.

Throughout the unit, students have:

• Compared sound and linguistic devices with examples.

• Listed figures of speech and compositional techniques with examples.

• Analyzed renowned orators' speeches for rhetorical devices.

• Demonstrated varied rhetorical devices in speech writing.

• Presented information clearly and adapted speech to different contexts, showing command of formal English.

Students have been encouraged to speak about issues they are passionate about. They have written their speeches and will learn public speaking strategies in forthcoming lessons. For Round 1, they will perform their speeches in their English lessons, with one speaker from each House selected for Round 2. In Round 2, these speakers will present to their House members, and one speaker from each House will be chosen to represent their House in the Grand Finale. Prizes to be won!
