Local sponsors provide merit or need-based scholarship opportunities for our BHS Seniors to use towards their future education/career goals. There are several scholarships being offered each year and every BHS Senior is eligible to apply for at least one! The more scholarships you apply to, the higher the chances you could receive one.
All scholarship applications will be available in the Counseling office and/or links to apply will be shared to student emails.Â
Scholarships are searched for locally, county-wide, state-wide, and nationally. If they are applicable to the majority of BHS Seniors, they will be posted to Xello in the Scholarship section. If a student is looking for a specific scholarship that may apply to them, they can meet with the counselor to find those resources (ex. scholarships for students majoring in nursing, scholarships for Hispanic heritage, scholarships for descendants of veterans, and so on).
A new feature in Xello has a scholarship search feature available to all grade levels.Â
Scholarships will start to be available to seniors before winter break and will be stated in the morning announcements. Students will receive applications and other information through their school emails and paper copies will be available in the counseling office.Â

The State Scholar Program recognizes students attending approved high schools (typically, Illinois public high schools) for outstanding academic achievement. State scholar designation provides honorary recognition with no monetary award. Approximately the top 10% of graduates from approved high schools are announced as State Scholars each year.Â
To be considered for State Scholar eligibility, you must:
Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen or meet the “undocumented student” criteria of the RISE Act
Be a resident of Illinois
Attend an approved high school
Take the ACT or SAT between August 1 and June 30 (by the end of the third semester before high school graduation*)
Perform in the top one-half of your high school class at the end of the third semester prior to graduation*, and/or score at or above the 95th percentile on the ACT or SAT
Graduate from high school during the academic year in which you were selected as a State Scholar
Note that meeting the requirements listed above qualifies the student to be considered for this program, but does not guarantee State Scholar designation. Each year, a specific formula is established to select State Scholars. Further details are provided HERE.
Students who qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program will be notified by the NMSC and by the counselor. After qualifying, an online application and school profile is required from student, counselor, and administrator. The student will be notified by NMSC they have moved on to a semi-finalist and/or finalist position during their senior year. They will also receive recognition at the BHS Awards Banquet in the Spring. More information about this program available at NationalMerit.org.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition among high school students for recognition and college scholarships that began in 1955. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®), a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. United States high school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which serves as an initial screen of over 1.3 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements.
Take the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall.
Meet all other program entry requirements.
The 2025 PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for entry to the 2026 program. Program entrants must take the test in the specified year of the high school program (see When to Take the Test). Most entrants will complete high school and enroll in college in Fall 2026.
This award recognizes the top 8% grade point averages of the graduating senior class (at the end of the 7th semester). The seniors must also be completing their 8th full semester of high school (they cannot have graduated early).
There is an award banquet held each year and sponsored by the Peoria Rotary Club. In previous years, the award banquet has been held at the Peoria Civic Center in May and recognizes the top seniors from all participating Peoria County and surrounding area high schools.Â
