Every month our Crownhill students focus on a character trait that will help them in their lives right now and their future.  Below is our definition of what that character trait looks like, and how our students could practice to get even better!

September: Cooperation

Cooperating is about working together and helping others. When kids cooperate, they have more positive social interactions and are better able to make and keep friends.

Ways to teach cooperation:

*Share                                                          *Explain the Rules

*Supportive of Others Ideas                    *Give Specific Praise

*Practice Problem Solving                        *Role-Play 

October: Appreciation

Appreciation is about recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something.  When we express appreciation and receive the same, our brain releases dopamine and serotonin, the two crucial neurotransmitters responsible for our emotions, and they make us feel 'good'. They enhance our mood immediately, making us feel happy from the inside. 

Ways to teach and show appreciation: 

*Say thank you                 *Be specific with details in thank you's

*Write in a gratitude journal      *Give kids ownership  

*Role-play                                      *Role-model how to 

*Be intentional to find positives throughout your day

November: Responsibility

Responsibility means being dependable, making good choices, and taking accountability for your actions. A responsible citizen looks out for the well being of others and understands we all have a part to play in making the world a better place. 

Ways to teach and show responsibility:

*Set Limits                                                    *Be Truthful

*Say no when appropriate                        *Be safe

*Establish and enforce expectations       *Work Hard

*Chores                                                         *Follow directions

December: Engagement

In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education

Ways to teach and show engagement: 

*Ask and answer questions.                    *Turn work in on time.

*Actively listen to others and put      *Stay on assigned websites    comments in the chat box.                              or apps.

*SLANT (sit-up, lean in, answer and ask questions, nod, track the speaker).     

 *Choose a learning environment free of distractions.

*Follow directions in a timely manner.

January - Self-Control

Self-control is a complex skill that develops over time. It allows kids to slow down and think through their actions. Some kids take longer than others to develop self-control.  There are three types of self-control:

  Impulse control  ---  Emotional control  ---  Movement control

Ways to teach and show self-control:

*Practice waiting/taking turns               *Practice calming strategies

*Practice anticipation skills (what to do they think will happen)

*Set a goal and plan for achieve it        *Keep body to self

* Think through and reflect how their behavior affected others/themselves
