Hi, I'm Ms. Callender!
I began my career at Bremerton School District in 2004 as a substitute paraeducator after completing my Bachelor's Degree in Communication with a focus on Professional Writing. I went on to earn a Master's in Secondary Education and teaching certification in 2006 and accepted a full-time teaching position as an English Teacher at Bremerton Junior High School. In 2007, when BJHS closed, I was excited to move up to Bremerton High School where I have remained happily ever since. Recently I completed my Principal Certification and am thrilled to be working toward a position in Administration.
I am not only a high school teacher, but I'm also a teacher for adults as I work with the organization Neural Education as a Champion. I engage in continuous research and study of the neuroscience of learning and in collaboration with other Neural Education Champions, I develop and deliver professional development to educators from around the region and beyond. I also love to share this information about the brain and body with students at the high school to help them understand how they can maximize their brain and body's abiity to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Prior to teaching at the secondary level, I taught preschool in Hawaii and worked as a Department of the Navy Office Administrator in Silverdale, WA and in Washington, D.C. as I moved around the country as a US Navy dependent. I have two adult children, Christopher and Shannon who both graduated from BHS; two grandsons, Pearson and TJ; and two dogs - Lilo, an eight year-old Whippet; and Remi, a five year-old chihuahua/terrier mixed-breed "tiny dog" that we adopted during the COVID pandemic when she was just 9 weeks old.
When not at school, I enjoy 3D printing, reading, playing Fortnite, and walking with my dogs.
