Target group: Year 11-13 PE Students
This report begins with a really thoughtful analysis of what has been occurring and achieved over the past three years through the period of school closures etc. The reflections on this, and referencing of insights from research are used to inform subsequent design in a really coherent way.
The two foci are well described and will resonate with other educators. The challenge of involving parents/whānau is addressed through the use of a variety of online technologies, and Pete identifies some of the changes in pedagogy that emerged as a result of the affordances of these technologies. Central to this was the increased level of learner agency and control of their learning - with the support of parents/whānau.
The second task of creating a booking system to access specialist PE equipment is an exciting innovation that could have application across a wide range of areas. Pete has illustrated the process he is going through to prototype the concept of a borrowing system, which will provide valuable insights for the eventual development of an online system into the future.
While it’s still early days with the trialing of a prototype, the initial feedback from learners appears positive. This project is a good illustration of an approach intended to address a significant issue for many of the practical subjects being taught, where specialised equipment is required in order to complete activities.
During the lockdown period and subsequently, after, a pattern emerged where students struggled at home to complete assessments. This was mainly due to students at home not having access to specialist equipment.
The biggest difference I believe this will make for students and whānau is the sense of ownership. By making specialist equipment available to learners when working from home, students feel a sense of belonging and agency. Students will feel connected to their classmates and the school, reducing the feeling of being disadvantaged by missing out on stuff. Students are taking responsibility for their own learning, which fits with our deep learning philosophy of leveraging digital and learning partnerships, also links with our 6 c’s namely Citizenship, Collaboration and Character

I began with an idea of creating a space online that allows students to request sports equipment that they require.
This has a two-fold effect.
1. They are engaged with their learning and
2. They are able to complete assessments using specialist equipment.
So far I have managed to prototype the idea using simple tools, and the result of this experience will help inform the design of a more sophisticated approach in the future.
