Doris Anschober
Bay of Islands International Academy
Target group: Year 3 and 4 Students
The idea of tapping into the things that inspire and motivate learners to engage them in learning experiences isn’t new, but Doris’s approach illustrates well how this can be done in a hybrid environment. Her final report breaks down her experience into smaller, specific steps that can easily be used to inform the experiences of other educators keen to do similarly - in particular, the process of creating and adding to the online environment (website) that was used as the focus for the class activity. The recordings of feedback from both learners and parents provides compelling evidence as to the success of this approach, in particular, the key shifts identified: increased learner agency, increased transparency in the learning process, and increased role of parents as teachers. Of interest here is the finding that, in context of this approach, the intent to use Zoom for daily meetings to share inspirations from home proved too disruptive.
When my learners need to stay at home due to unforeseen circumstances like illness or other family commitments, they often don’t have the time or ability to engage in the online learning opportunities I sent home.
Students at home are often engaging in other activities than school work - and I would like to value and use these as authentic learning possibilities and life experiences for themselves and their peers at school.
Being able to share experiences, adventures and journeys through photos, videos or writing will give the students a voice on our learning journey. Having access to google slides or just the fact of knowing that they can send photos etc to me, the teacher, will give them the opportunity to connect, share, explain, become an expert, teach and learn.

I talked to the students and parents/whanau about the project and encouraged them to take photos/videos etc to capture their home experiences. I kept on reminding them - putting the use of the site into the online class timetable. I introduced the learning inspirations site and explained the pages, and also explained how to take photos or videos with a mobile phone.
