Target group: Year 8 Students
Four things stand out from this project:
a) The deliberate and planned experimentation in a range of areas to increase access to and participation in the classroom-based learning.
b) The use of various technology solutions to enable participation in the learning by students in class and at home.
c) The exploration of gamification as a key motivator for participation, and how this can be used to support pedagogical intentions.
d) The importance of consulting with and responding to student voice through the various surveys and interactions.
This project provides an excellent example of how the short-cycle, experimental approach can help improve classroom practice and enable solutions to be implemented through the process of deliberate planning, observation and response to student feedback. Lana’s reflections provide useful starting points for other teachers who are addressing similar concerns.
Students experience feelings of being overwhelmed when they return from time at home. They feel unsure of what is happening as they have missed days at a time, or their attendance has been sporadic and they miss random chunks. This then affects their wellbeing, and at times also increases the non-attendance at physical school because of how they are feeling.
The desire for them to join zoom or engage in learning whilst at home is low.
Students have said contributing factors for hesitation is not wanting to be seen or heard online, sometimes the internet is glitchy, hard to hear group conversations and hard to see their classmates so feel disconnected.
By introducing a variety of online platforms I will be able to see what things promote engagement for these learners. I particularly want to see the impact of a gamified approach, where learners are regularly challenged and receive immediate feedback based on their actions.
I will also be more proactive in positive reinforcement for those that manage to join, or make contact in their preferred way. Doing this will hopefully make them want to make a habit of joining whilst at home when they’re feeling up to it.

I held discussions with students about how best to tailor their zoom experience to them - doing what they feel comfortable with. I trained up the students in the on-site classroom on the use of Zoom so they all had the opportunity to develop a sense of ownership which encouraged the ‘reluctant joiners’ to join when they’re at home. We promoted the use of break out rooms more if students wished. I recorded instructions and included videos on the class site for the students to access at any time. I introduced the online platform Gather to explore the impact of a gamified approach to learning.
