Arrival Procedures

Car riders and walkers enter through using the stacking lanes. Parents who choose to park and walk their child to the door will need to walk to the side door for their child to enter.  After 7:55AM students will need to be signed in by the parent at the office.

Students who need to eat breakfast need to arrive between 7:30-7:55AM.

On the first day of school parents will not be able to walk their child inside. You may walk them to the side door.

Transportation

If your child will be going home a different way, please send a note in your child’s blue folder, send a message on class dojo in addition to emailing Juanita Kucera, juanita.kucera@brazosportisd.net by 2PM.

We can not accept only the word of the child. Messages from the children often get confused and turned around.

Grading Policy

Our district uses a skills based grading scale for Kindergarten. The scale consists of a 1, 2, or 3 for each skill.

1= Your child is showing mastery of the skill

2= Your child SOMETIMES shows mastery

3= Your child is struggling with this skill.

Most skills are assessed all year long. If they do not master it at the beginning of the year, don’t worry. We continue to teach most skills and students will still have more chances to continue growing and practicing until mastery.

Attendance

We all want our students to get a great education! The building blocks for a great education begins with students coming to school every day. Missing school means students are missing out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success later in life.

There are always times when students will need to miss school, such as when they are ill. If your child must miss school, speak with your child’s teacher. When your child returns you must send a signed note explaining their absence or email gladyspolkattendance@brazosportisd.net within 48 hours for the absence to be excused.

Behavior & Communication

A blue take-home folder goes home with your child every day. Inside this folder are your child’s conduct sheets. Please check your child’s folder every day. The conduct sheet needs to be signed every Friday. Every time your child receives a conduct mark, they lose a point on their conduct grade. Pleae note that your child may receive conduct marks in Specials (which include music, P.E., Library, and STREAM Lab) and/or for not meeting cafeteria expectations.

We are utilizing Class Dojo and the Polk Parent Hub this year as our main forms of communication. You will need to make sure you are connected to your child’s class. If you need help finding the app or setting it up, please let us know.

Celebrations

Birthday treats may be purchased through child nutrition. Individual gifts (balloons, flowers, etc.) will not be delivered to the classrooms during instructional time. If they are delivered to school, they will remain in the office until the end of the day.  Teachers cannot provide a list of students' names and contacts for birthday invitations. We also will not be allowing students to pass out birthday invitations unless it is for everyone in the class

Snacks

Towards the end of each day, we will have a snack. During the first week of school teachers will be providing snacks for them. This is something such as a handful of goldfish or pretzels, just a little something to put in their stomach until they go home.  If you can, please send a snack with your child. Please send enough snacks to serve 20 students in our class. Some examples of snacks would be Cheese-Its, graham crackers, pretzels, vanilla wafers, fruit snacks, cereal, goldfish, and Chex mix. We do ask that you refrain from sending snacks that contain a lot of sugar (such as candy) or snacks with peanuts or peanut butter. Your help is greatly appreciated!

Dismissal

Dismissal is at 3:35 PM. If you are picking up your child in the car-rider lane we ask that you have your car tag visible at the time you enter the parking lane. If you do not have a car tag, you must park, come inside, and show an ID to the front office to pick up your child.

Rainy Day Dismissal

If your child is a walker/bike rider please have a plan in place for rainy days. If it rains we will send a message out on Dojo. They will not be allowed to walk in the rain.

Remember there will be NO walk up pick up. You must send a signed note, email to Juanita, or Dojo message before 2:00PM if your child’s transportation is changing. We do this to ensure every child’s safety when leaving school.

Breakfast & Lunch

All students will receive free breakfast and lunch this year regardless of income.

Breakfast - Starts when doors open at 7:30AM.  Our cafeteria closes  at 7:55AM. If your child is wanting to eat breakfast PLEASE get them to school with enough time to eat before the cafeteria closes.

Dress Code

Dress your child in comfortable “school clothes.” Flip flops are not allowed. The children must have tennis shoes everyday for PE and recess. If your child wears sandals or boots, please make sure they have a pair of tennis shoes to change into. Please label your child's jackets, water bottles, and lunch boxes.

Extra clothes

Accidents happen all the time. Our nurse doesn't have clothes. Please make sure your child has extra clothes in a ziplock bag that will stay in their backpack.
