Speaking Development Events (SDEs) help FFA members enhance their communication, critical thinking, and public speaking skills. These events prepare students for careers in agriculture and beyond by developing their ability to research, organize, and present information confidently. SDEs challenge students to become effective advocates for agriculture while demonstrating professionalism and poise.
Prepared Public Speaking – Participants research, write, and deliver a 6-8 minute speech on an agricultural topic of their choice. Speeches must be well-structured, factual, and effectively presented before a panel of judges.
Extemporaneous Speaking – Contestants draw a random agricultural topic and have 30 minutes to research and prepare a 4-6 minute speech. They must think quickly, organize ideas effectively, and deliver their speech with confidence.
Soil Stewardship – Competitors develop and present a speech focused on the importance of soil and water conservation, including sustainable agricultural practices and environmental stewardship. This contest often follows an annual theme determined by the Texas State Soil & Water Conservation Board.
