Days 1
B1: Develop design specifications
Example A:
This example shows the parts of the specification.
Your specification should have:
a number
a statement that describes the specification
reference to your research
state how it will be tested
Example B:
This example shows several specifications. Notice how they are organized.
Days 1 2, and 3
B2: Develops a range of feasible design ideas, using an appropriate medium(s) and detailed annotation, which can be correctly interpreted by others
Goal:Develop 5-7 initial ideas for solutions
Your focus here should be on generating a range (variety) of different ideas.
Using your choice of mediums (iPad, pen, marker, physical prototype, etc.) develop initial ideas. Focus on variety of ideas
Use the SCAMPER tool to help you
Add annotations about features and functions.
Goal: Use feedback from peers and morphological analysis to further develop new ideas for a solution.
Arrange with a peer(s) to get feedback on your ideas. Record this feedback in some way. Evidence of feedback can be in any form: Video, shared document with notes, sketches with comments from peers, quotations...
Develop 2 new ideas based on this feedback. Record these ideas in B2.3 of your inquiry portfolio
Sketching resources
Feedback for Designers slides
By the end of this section you should:
B2.1: five to seven initial ideas, with annotations of features
B2.2: Evidence of feedback from peers
B2.3: two new ideas based on feedback from peers, with annotations
Day 3
B2: Developing Ideas
Goal: Use feedback from user (client), and/or expert to develop your ideas
Using a survey or interview, present your ideas to your user and/or expert to gather feedback.
Show evidence of this feedback in some form (video, notes, photos, shared document, etc.). Identify areas for improvement and development of your design ideas. Include this evidence in B2.4 of your Inquiry Portfolio
Develop one or two new ideas based on this feedback and analysis. Include these sketches in B2.5 of your Inquiry Portfolio
Feedback for designers slides
By the end of these two days you should:
B2.4: Evidence of feedback from user or expert
B2.5: One or two sketches based on feedback from user or expert
Day 4 and Day 5
B3:presents the chosen design and justifies fully and critically its selection with detailed reference to the design specification
Review your work and feedback in B2.1-B2.5. Identify areas for improvement and development of your idea.
Using the tools of your choice, develop a design that best represents your idea for a solution. You can use digital tools (iPad, Fusion 360, software...) or pen, paper, and markers.
Your presentation should be recorded in B3.1 of your inquiry portfolio. It should include
one isometric color drawing of your design,
two to three detail images of your design
annotations of key features and functions.
1 Day
B4: develops accurate and detailed planning drawings/diagrams and outlines requirements for the creation of the chosen solution
For this step, you will create a cardboard model of your design using flat-pack approaches.
Using your B3 drawing as a guide, create a model to double check that your design can be manufactured using CAD/CAM technologies. Follow the instructions in the slides below:
Grid paper for sketching Available from your teacher, or download:
2. JPG (for background on drawing tablet)
By the end of this class you should:
Inserted the Revised Criterion B4 slides into your portfolio.
Complete your cardboard model
Updated Slide B4.1 and B4.2
2 Days
B4: develops accurate and detailed planning drawings/diagrams and outlines requirements for the creation of the chosen solution
For this step, you will create several drawings to help you build the CAD model. Review the B4 guidance in the slides below. You can create these drawings either by hand (pen and paper) or using software of your choice.
Create the following drawings:
One orthographic drawing that shows the complete design (Black and white line drawings)
One drawing for each unique part (Black and white line drawings)
Grid paper for sketching Available from your teacher, or download:
2. JPG (for background on drawing tablet)
By the end of this step you should:
Completed a set of planning drawings
inserted these drawings into your portfolio.
