Day 1 and Day 2
A2: Research
Goal: Understand some of the features of flat-pack design through building a cardboard model of an item of furniture
Follow the instructions in the slide for how to complete these steps.
Goal: Explore concepts related to the unit
In groups of 3-4, explore the resources on Sustainable Consumption. We will look at content from these areas:
DfM (Design for Manufacturing)
DfA (Design for Assembly) and DfD (Design for Disassembly)
Sustainable Consumption
Triple Bottom Line
Case Study: Open Desk
Follow the instructions of your teacher and use the slides to guide you.
Goal: Gather and share inspiration.
Using your understanding of Flatpack furniture, complete the following tasks:
Add 6-9 designs that you find inspiring to your Pinterest page.
Choose one of those designs, and share it to this Padlet. Follow the instructions for identifying and describing your contribution.
Goal: Create a Inquiry PostCard and share it with the group
Go to Canva and create a postcard that communicates one idea, thought, or question about this unit of inquiry. Your card could be related to one of the concepts or ideas we looked at so far: Sustainability, CAD/CAM technology, Flatpack furniture, etc.,. Your card should include TEXT and IMAGES
Upload your PostCard here.
By the end of this section you should have:
Created a cardboard model of a item of flatpack furniture
Completed a see-think-wonder thinking routine on the model
Added 6-9 items to your Pinterest Page for inspiration
Completed the Sustainable Consumption activity and created a mindmap that shows your understanding
Created and shared a headline/postcard about your thoughts about the unit.
Days 4 and 5
A1: Identifying a problem
Goal: Select a user and gather data about their needs
You have two options to explore with regards to your user. Explore your options here and choose one.
After selecting a user, you need to develop a research plan. Follow the steps in the Research section here.
Identify whether you gather this information from primary or secondary resources. Follow the instructions here. Remember, you should have a mixture of primary and secondary sources.
You should show evidence of primary and secondary research
By the end of these two days you should:
Gathered all your data from the survey
Completed your Primary AND Secondary research
Completed an analysis of 3 products
Day 4
A3 : Analysis
Example Survey: User, Task, and Product: example of a survey that collects demographic data and information about the user, task, and product.
Identify 3-4 products that can inspire a solution. The products should provide you with some insight or understanding of how you might solve the design problem.
Follow the steps on the Morphological Analysis sheet to complete your analysis. You will do this work in pen.
Insert a clear scan of your analysis into your portfolio
By the end of these two days you should:
Gathered all your data from the survey
Completed your Primary AND Secondary research
Completed an analysis of 3 products
Day 4 and Day 5
A4: Design Brief
Review the concepts in the slide show.
In NoodleTools, Identify what type of Anthropometric data you need to gather. Use the resources and databases to gather the data. Record these as notes in your NoodleTools card.
In your Notecard, be sure to identify the measurement(s) you are using, and describe why they are necessary.
eg. I used the measurement of height because will..
.In your NoteCard, be sure to Justify the percentile range your chose - Describe why you used this particular percentile.
eg. I chose the 5th percentile because this will....
Day 4 and Day 5
A1: User Need
A4: Design Brief
Now, after completing your user research (A2 and A3), it is time to present your findings.
You will write an analysis of the user needs, and present a design brief that outlines how you will solve the problem.
Review the research you have done in A2 and A3. Identify the important or significant findings. You can highlight these in yellow in your portfolio.
Follow the instructions in the slides below to organize and present your work.
Using your design brief and research, you will develop a solution (Criterion B). Be sure your research is strong enough to help you develop a creative and innovative solution.
