I hope that you are able to enjoy some quality time with your son over the next three weeks.

Dear Abernethy Parents (#16),
Notes
👉 Exam Timetable Integrity: Please double-check the exam timetable with your son. Session times vary across the five-week period, and we want to ensure zero missed papers due to misread schedules.
👉 Grooming and Shaving: Rules regarding hair and shaving remain fully active until the final day of the examination period.
👉 Campus Discipline: Boys not registered for supervised study must arrive just before and leave campus immediately after their exams or official school sports practices.
Lionheart
Congratulations to Antonio and Michael (Form III) for demonstrating exceptional communication and leadership by reaching the finals of the public speaking competition 🙌

Today's address laid out the structural blueprint for maintaining focus and physical endurance across a grueling five-week exam block. We discussed the necessity of planning structured "cheat days" or scheduled downtime to prevent cognitive burnout. I challenged the boys to anchor their daily routines around non-negotiable health baselines: a strict eight-hour sleep schedule to consolidate memory, a low-GI breakfast like oats to fuel mental performance, and 30 minutes of daily high-heart-rate exercise to manage stress.
True study is defined by output, not hours spent staring at pages. If your son cannot show you a physical stack of written notes and summaries he has generated, he has not studied. I encourage you to check his workspace—ensure it is completely free of digital distractions and that his phone is kept in another room entirely. Let's help them push past minimum benchmarks and strive for their maximum capability over the coming weeks.
Kind regards,
Craig
Dear Abernethy Parents (#15),
Notes
👉 Supervised Study: I advise against this, because there are too many distractions and boys should work independently at home. Please respond to the following link either way:
https://forms.gle/PVGhQe64BMWqW1rq7
👉 Blood Donation next week: I urge boys (16+) who did not receive the measles vaccine last week to make a difference.
👉 Joseph Production: The final performances are tonight and tomorrow at 19:00. Boys can attend for free in their school uniform.
Apple Initiative: A sincere thank you to the parents who continue to send apples every week without prompting. This long-standing initiative remains a great benefit to the boys.
Lionheart
Connor (Form 5) for stepping far out of his comfort zone to join the school production. Seeing him on stage, performing with a French accent, was a testament to the growth that happens when a boy tries something completely new.

Today's focus was on the trap of online gambling. South Africans spent R1.5 trillion on online gambling last year, fueled by marketing that tells people they deserve luxury through luck rather than labor. I discussed how these systems are designed to create lifelong customers by offering sign-up bonuses and wins that mask a mathematical certainty of loss. A man's future is built on hard work and discipline, not on a retirement plan based on luck. I urge you to continue this discussion with your son.
Kind regards,
Craig

Today's focus was on Potential and Opportunity. We discussed how potential is not a static resource; it decreases every time we let an opportunity pass us by. I challenged the boys to realize that they rarely "decide" to fail at a goal; they simply miss the moment to step up. I encourage you to discuss the opportunities that your son has that he is not currently taking advantage of.
To all the mother-figures: Happy Mother's Day on Sunday - thank you for the many silent sacrifices you make for our boys 🙏
Kind regards,
Craig

Liam (Form 2) for placing 9th in South Africa at the U17 National Squash Championships. This is an exceptional achievement, especially considering he only turned 15 last weekend.

Today I explained how boys can set themselves up for success in their studying:
✍️ Ensure you have all the necessary books, notes and memos before starting
✍️ Create a quiet environment that is free from distractions
✍️ Leave your phone in another room (not on silent in your pocket)
✍️ Plan each day around when you study best, each session should be 45 minutes long with a 15 minute (active) break between sessions
✍️ Watching videos, attending extra lessons or private tutoring, and reading (and highlighting) is not studying; *writing is the most effective form of studying* .
You can monitor the amount of studying that your son is doing by asking to see the amount of writing that he has done each day.
Kind regards,
Craig

👉 Maritzburg Exchange: There is no formal school tomorrow. If you want your son to come to school tomorrow, please email me.
👉 ALLXS Cards: These cards will cease to work at the end of April. Please ensure any remaining funds are used or removed before then.
👉 Valuables: Please remind your sons to hand all valuables to their coaches before matches; this is safer than leaving them in their kit bags.

The focus today was on the "Minimum Requirements Trap." In 2025, South African universities received 4 million applications for just 60,000 spots; this means that a "Bachelor Pass" must be seen as permission to apply, not guarantee of acceptance. I have challenged the boys to shift their focus from the minimum requirements to their maximum potential.
We shared a planning document with the boys in tutor period yesterday and explained that they should be managing their lives to allocate 7 hours per week to dedicated exam preparation; I encourage you to discuss this with your son and ask to see the planning that he has done.

Craig

Today I discussed the documentary Inside the Manosphere on Netflix , which explores the danger of influencers who promote toxic views or performative masculinity purely for followers and financial gain. I challenged the boys to understand that a good man is defined by his integrity, not his follower count or material wealth. As iron sharpens iron, we are shaped by the people we follow online and the friends we choose in person. I encourage you to watch this documentary (if you are able) or discuss this culture with your son.

The award goes to Katlego (Form 2): despite a painful rugby injury on Saturday that required a hospital visit, he remained exceptionally polite to every medic and staff member he encountered. His ability to maintain his manners and "Game Face" under physical duress is a testament to his character.
Message
My message today was based on the four types of runners I saw in IH Cross Country last week:
💭 Avoiders prioritize protecting their ego over growth. By using excuses to dodge challenges, they ensure their ability is never tested—preventing failure but also stalling all progress.
💭 Unprepared Sprinters start with high energy but lack sustained discipline. Without a foundation of consistent habits, their momentum fades as soon as the initial excitement ends and real work begins.
💭 Last-Minute Crammers try to replace months of steady effort with an exhausting final push. Like sprinting the end of a race they didn't run, the effort is visible but ineffective without long-term preparation.
💭 Prepared Performers understand that success is preparation meeting performance. Grounded in daily habits, they face challenges with confidence, knowing they have already committed the effort required to succeed.
Ask your son which runner he was last week, and how that approach has affected other aspects of his life this term?
Kind regards,
Craig

The award is presented to Henry (Form 4); he demonstrated exceptional leadership by standing up for a peer on a class WhatsApp group, effectively stopping a group bullying incident. This quiet moral courage is the standard we strive for in Abernethy.

We discussed the Sunday Battle Plan using the Rocks, Pebbles, and Sand analogy. Research-backed time management shows that success requires us to prioritize our biggest goals on Sunday evening so that smaller distractions do not fill our week first. Research from the Dunedin Study proves that self-control is a more accurate predictor of success than IQ or social status. Maturity requires the rational prefrontal cortex to override the impulsive limbic system.
The Five-Second Gap, is a practical tool I discussed with the boys today: pausing for five seconds before reacting allows the rational brain to take the lead. A simple guiding question for them is: What do I wish I had done yesterday?

Our Lionheart Award this week goes to Finn, a Form I boy. While many others walked past a staff member struggling with heavy boxes, Finn was the only one to step forward, take the load, and carry it to its destination. When offered a reward, he simply said, "No ma'am, I was just doing what is right." This internal drive to act without expectation of reward is the standard of excellence we want for every boy in Abernethy.

Today I spoke to the boys about the essential foundation of leadership: leading oneself. We often focus on the public acts of leadership, but true character is built on the private disciplines of health, organization, and personal responsibility. I challenged the boys to see their daily habits—from their sleep to the fuel they put in their bodies—as the first step in proving they are capable of leading others.
I encourage you to discuss these small "acts of what is right" with your son this weekend and ask him how he is leading himself.

I discussed the transition from being observers who complain to being men of action - I challenged the boys to realize that character is defined by those who step forward when others remain silent. It is easy to notice when things go wrong, but it takes true grit to be the person who provides a solution.
To celebrate this spirit, we have revived the Lionheart (Man of the Week) Award. This week it was awarded to Jeremiah, a Form II boy, who noticed a peer in his tutor group struggling with organization and, instead of just talking about it, he took it upon himself to bring the boy a diary to help him manage his responsibilities. This practical act of kindness and leadership is exactly what we strive for in Abernethy House.
I encourage you to discuss this with your son and see where he can act to improve something in your community.

Craig

Today I spoke to the boys about a story I encountered while reading Moby Dick. It describes a man who lost his family, his home, and his business because he unknowingly let a thief (alcoholism) into his house. I warned the boys that for many of them, the thief is already in their pocket in the form of their smartphone.
We discussed how easy access to pornography and gambling can hijack the brain's reward system and damage their future and relationships. I also highlighted the risks of catfishing and blackmail on platforms like Instagram, where algorithms often treat young men as products to be sold to predatory interests.
I have given the boys three specific challenges to help them regain control over their digital lives:
👉 Delete the Instagram app and access the platform only through a mobile web browser to reduce intrusive notifications and data tracking.
👉 Change their WhatsApp screen name to their actual name to ensure their online behavior aligns with their real-world identity and accountability.
👉 Update WhatsApp privacy settings to invite-only so they cannot be added to groups without their explicit permission, and remove themselves from any groups where they do not know or trust the other members.
I encourage you to follow up on these points with your son tonight. Protecting their digital well-being is essential for their development and the reputations they are building.

Craig

Our social outreach focus this term is a stationery drive. I encourage you to use this weekend to clear out drawers or pick up a few items with your son to send in on Monday.
While financial contributions are not always possible, giving back is a skill every person can learn. It is a vital way for them to acknowledge their privilege and understand that they always have something to offer others, whether through physical donations or acts of service.
I invite you to lead by example. By assisting the PA or getting involved with the governing body, your involvement shows our boys that gratitude is an active choice. By demonstrating this commitment yourself, you help your son learn that giving back is a fundamental responsibility.

Craig

Dear Abernethy Parents (#1),
Happy new year and all the best for 2026! I hope that you have had a good break and were able to enjoy some quality time with your son.
Our goal in Abernethy is to produce independent young men who will be a force for good in this world. To this end, we would appreciate your assistance in the following three areas:
1. Ensure that your son has a page-a-day diary by Wednesday; these will be used on a daily basis to teach boys crucial organisational skills.
2. Ask your son for information, because all necessary information is shared with the boys (usually in person and digitally). This is done to teach them to manage their own lives; if they do not know, ask them to find out.
3. Ensure that your son gets between 8 and 10 hours of uninterrupted (quality) sleep per night; here are four simple steps to start with:
- Set your son's bedtime based on his daily waking time. For example, if your son needs to wake up at 05:30 every morning then his bedtime should be between 19:30 and 21:30. This bedtime must remain constant to establish a healthy sleeping pattern.
- Your son should sleep in a cool (not warm) and dark room.
- Your son should have no screen-time in the 30 minutes before going to bed.
- Your son should not have a cell phone (or any other device) in his bedroom between bedtime and waking time. The main reason for this is to limit distractions and scrolling that delays or interrupts sleep, but this has the added benefit of restricting unmonitored access to pornography and various other anti-social behaviours.
I look forward to working with you to ensure that our boys become good men.
Kind regards,
Craig

We emphasize Outreach to teach two critical life skills: Gratitude and Holistic Giving.
👉 Gratitude: Exposure to diverse circumstances helps boys recognize and appreciate their privileges. This is fundamental to developing empathy.
👉 Giving: We teach that giving is not just about money, but about time, effort, and care. We offer opportunities for financial support (Christmas boxes), physical action (Swimathon, blood donation), and the valuable contribution of time through the Outreach Society (trips to orphanages, retirement homes).
The lesson is simple: Every boy has something of value to give. Thank you for helping us raise young men who are both aware and actively involved in their community.
Kind regards,
Craig
Dear Abernethy Parents (#23),
We tried vertical tutor groups this term to build relationships between boys of different ages in the hope that the older boys would benefit from the responsibility of having a younger brother who looks up to them, and the younger boys would benefit from experience and maturity of an older brother. We learnt from this experience and I hope that a foundation for these relationships has been laid, but we will return to registration in horizontal groups and use tutor periods to further these relationships.

Health is wealth: Exercise, eat and sleep well.
Act, don't react: Use a diary to plan ahead and address issues before they become problems.
Connect and reflect: Put your phone away, look people in the eye, and consider the world and your place in it.
Read to lead: Reading expands your horizons, improves your language, and makes you a more interesting person.
Success is giving your best in preparation and performance, anything less is failure.

Message - Next week is not a break.
The mid year examinations are four weeks away; kindly ensure that your son uses his time next week to prepare.
A leading expert in social media law, Emma Sadleir, addressed the boys on Tuesday; here is a summary that I shared with the boys:
Good evening men, some notes from the discussion with Emma Sadleir today:
👉 You are considered to be the author of anything you post, share or like.
👉 Leave any groups where you do not know the members and cannot control the content that is posted.
👉 Asking for intimate pictures (or other content) is solicitation.
👉 Sharing intimate content (your own or someone else') of under 18s is distribution of child pornography; keeping it on your phone is possession.
👉 Beware of any contacts you have not met - video call is the best way to ensure authenticity.
👉 Saying it was a "joke" is not a legal defence for bullying, hate speech or solicitation.
👉 Visit https://www.thedigitallawco.com/ for more information and support.
Please review your groups, chats and gallery (stickers included) immediately to ensure that you're safe
I urge you to visit her website and discuss these issues with your son.
Kind regards,
Craig Stephens

Message - Beware the barrenness of a busy life. - Socrates.
Our obsession with being busy comes at the expense of our ability to enjoy life. It is important to be engaged, but we must make time to slow down and reflect on our daily experiences if we hope to learn from them and experience life fully.
I am sure that you are aware of the tragic passing of one of the Form V boys at the end of last term; I hope that you had an opportunity to reflect on this with your son.
Kind regards,
Craig Stephens

Message - We have no excuse.
We have access to information on the process, habits and lifestyle of the world's best in every sphere of life. If boys want to know how the world's best footballers, leaders, investors and (even) influencers achieved their success, they can find information on their eating, sleeping, training and lifestyle habits. I encouraged the boys to do some research and compare the habits of those people who our boys dream of emulating and learn from them.
As parents, we are fortunate to have access to research on parenting and raising children and I hope that we can use this to help our children become the best versions of themselves. With that in mind, here are a number of the research-backed habits we can implement in our houses to promote the growth and wellbeing of our children:
Eating regular meals together around a table without any screens present. This promotes better communication, more meaningful relationships and healthier eating habits.
Maintaining consistent daily routines for eating, sleeping and exercise. Routines help children regulate their emotions and behaviours better.
No access to a cell phone (or any other screen) from 30 minutes before bed until morning. This promotes sleep, improves mental health and removes risk of antisocial online behaviours.
Promoting a love of learning and language through reading. This starts by reading to your child, then reading with them and then reading in front of them so that they model their behaviour on yours.
Encourage independence from a young age: do not do something for them that they could do themself. This gives them the confidence to be themselves and take control of their lives.
I hope that you enjoy the time with your son at home.
Kind regards,
Craig Stephens

Notes
Your son was given a data update form today; kindly check the details, make changes where necessary, sign and return the form on Monday.
Late arrivals: the policy has been changed (attached) - kindly ensure that your son arrives with ample time to get to registration before 7:30 every day.
Stationery drive: thank you for the generous contributions, please send any final contributions in on Monday.
Inter House Athletics is on Saturday the 16th of August and it is a compulsory event for all boys; please ensure that your son is available on that weekend, the following weekend is an open weekend on the school calendar.
Message - Your son is watching you.
I addressed the importance eye contact in connecting with people in house assembly yesterday. A number of incidents in the past week reminded me how much of our children's behaviour is modelled on our own: how do we treat those less fortunate than us - do we great them with a smile (if we cannot assist them) or roll up the window and ignore them? How do we speak about people, specifically people who we see as different? Our children notice how we act far more than how we tell them to act.
I hope that you make time to connect with your family (without devices) over the weekend.
Kind regards,
Craig Stephens

7 June - Founders Weekend: Winter Sport against Jeppe at Home
9 August - Winter Sport against Affies away

29 August - Abernethy Afternoon
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
There are an increasing number of studies linking regular family meals (around a table and without any devices) to various emotional and physical health benefits, better academic performance, and decreased likelihood of engaging in risky behaviours such as substance abuse, unhealthy eating habits, and mental health struggles like anxiety and depression.
Message: Lifestyle Audit
I was pleased to see so many of our boys (and staff) giving their best in the race this morning. Our aim is to address the lifestyle underlying poor performance (over 30 minutes) over the next twelve months to affect positive change in our boys' lives. I encourage you to discuss your son's result today with him to see if their is room for improvement; the goal is not to have a house of elite athletes, but rather a house of physically capable and emotionally healthy teenage boys.
Notes
Please teach your son to give by contributing to the Outreach Initiative for stationery this term.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
I am very proud to say that Abernethy donated the most units of blood at yesterday's Blood Drive; we all have so much and I hope to see more boys giving selflessly next term.
Message - The Beauty of Inter House Cross Country
I love inter house Cross Country for two reasons:
It is a challenge that very few people enjoy - the way that boys approach this event says a great deal about how they face challenges in life.
It is the only inter house event where every boy matters and so it is the perfect test of house character, especially because:
the boys who come in last for each house have a far greater effect on the overall result than those who come in first, and
boys who do not participate get placed behind the last person who does (they are assigned last place +1).
Watch your son over the coming week: is he going to embrace the challenge and give his best, or is he going to look for a reason not to compete? I urge you not to let your son avoid this challenge; running 4 km should be no challenge at all for a healthy teenage boy.
Notes
IH Cross Country is next Thursday - 27 February.
Please teach your son to give by contributing to the Outreach Initiative for stationery this term.

Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Message - Use the time you have now to save time later
The time between 7:30 and 14:15 should be dedicated to academic work. The most successful boys learn to maximise their use of the resources they have, thereby freeing up time to be used differently or more productively after school. I have noticed this week how many boys require constant supervision and reminders to stay on task. I encourage you to discuss this with your son and monitor his ability to work independently to complete a task.
Notes
There will be a tutor afternoon on Friday the 14th of March; please ensure that your son is available to enjoy the afternoon with his group.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Message - Change your son's life
Teenagers should not have a smartphone in their bedroom at night. Phones decrease sleep quality and quantity, provide easy access to pornography, and open the door to other harmful behaviours like cyber bullying and sexting.
I urge you to take your son's phone from him (half an hour) before he goes to bed; this will improve his:
academic performance through better memory consolidation and improved focus in class;
mental health by limiting access to the low-level anxiety caused by scrolling through an endless stream of "perfect" lives;
relationship with (and respect for) women by limiting exposure to unrealistic expectations of women and sexual relationships.
Notes
Thank you for your continued support in our collection of bottle caps; we delivered 29 large dog food bags filled with caps to the Sweethearts Foundation yesterday: https://www.instagram.com/p/DFt8zKxNYT9/
Please teach your son to give by contributing to the Outreach Initiative for stationery this term.

Notes
Learn to Swim - swimming is a life skill that every boy should have. If your son cannot swim or lacks confidence I urge you to sign him up for our learn to swim program by completing the attached form and sending it to abolduc@boyshigh.com; lessons are on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Extra lessons - please encourage your sons to attend the school's extra lessons (according to the attached schedules) which are offered by professional teachers with experience in how the syllabus is presented and assessed.
Support - all Form I to III boys are expected to support at least five events on the attached list; boys will be informed via the Abernethy Men WhatsApp group which prefect they must meet after the event to be marked present.
We would like to keep a bag of apples in the front of each registration venue for boys who do not have breakfast; please contact me if you are willing to assist with this initiative.
Message - Your online persona should reflect who you are
I addressed the boys on a number of problems that have become common in the age of social media - I spoke about authorship, permanence, context, and child pornography. I encourage you to discuss this with your son and ask him what lessons he learnt and what changes he will be making to his social media (specifically WhatsApp) activity and settings.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens

Notes
All boys are expected to meet on Shalang at 17:00 tomorrow in their house kit (Form Is in PT kit) for the IH Gala
I have attached the assessment schedule for Term 1
I urge you to let your son do his own admin: make him responsible for contacting teachers, finding information and organising his activities. He must be given the opportunity to try, fail and learn in order to become an independent young man.
Message
We introduced the new Form Is to the house this morning and I spoke about the importance of the older-brother relationships that we want our seniors to form with the juniors. I encourage you to discuss mentorship with your son and ask him about the example that he is setting and what he is doing to be an older brother to the younger boys.

Dear Abernethy Parents
Happy new year and all the best for 2025!
I have included my usual notes at the bottom of this email and in the attached booklet that will be given to the boys; please read through these as a reminder of how we do things in Abernethy.
Notes
All new boys must gather on the lawn in front of the main building tomorrow morning at 7:30 and all returning boys must go to the hall for assembly.
Kindly ensure that your son's hairstyle aligns with the school's Code of Conduct, specifically that there may be no steps or significant differences in length between the hair on the side and top of their head.
Message - Our actions define us, not our potential.
Here is an outline for our initial focus this year:
Success is giving your best in preparation and performance; failure is giving anything less than your best.
50% is a pass - this standard aligns better with international norms and will guarantee that every Abernethy boy is able to select the subjects of his choice and have the option of attending a university
Every boy must be engaged in a sporting and a cultural activity throughout the year. The extramural programme is a what sets Boys High apart by producing well-rounded men.
I encourage you to discuss these points with your son and hear what he has planned for the year ahead.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Any reports that were not collected this morning will be available in reception between 7:00 and 15:30 on Monday to Thursday next week and then again from the 8th of January. If you would like someone else to collect your son's report, kindly inform reception@boyshigh.com of this arrangement via email. The 2025 access stickers are in these envelopes; please keep these as we will not issue more in January.
We bid farewell Form Vs and their parents: thank you for your support of Abernethy House over the past five year and we wish you all the very best for the next exciting phase of life.
Thank you for trusting us with your sons - we appreciate the support that we receive from our parents as we work toward the common goal of producing good men. Thank you for all the lovely gifts and kind messages of support that you have given to my staff and me - we really do appreciate the sentiment.
I wish you all a blessed festive season and hope that you are able to enjoy this special time with your family.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Notes
Boys may not be unsupervised on the property between 7:30 and 13:00; kindly ensure that your son is either dropped off and picked up within 15 minutes of his exam time, or he is in supervised study.
Please assist us in ensuring that your son is properly groomed (hair and shaving) before every exam until the last day.
There is a Remembrance Day Assembly on Monday, please remember that:
all exams start at 7:30
no early departures will be allowed
assembly will end around 12:00
I encourage you to check in with your son after the first week:
How is he feeling?
Has he established a healthy study routine?
Has he been studying by writing?
Have you seen the notes that he has been making?
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Reminders:
I do not recommend supervised study, because the venues are crowded, there is limited staff presence, and boys can work more effectively with fewer distractions at home. However, if your son will be doing supervised study, please ensure that he is there from 08:00 until 13:00 every day and that you contact Ms Nel (jnell@boyshigh.com), if your son cannot attend.
If your son misses and exam, kindly email the doctor's note to Mrs van Wyk (svanwyk@boyshigh.com) as soon as possible.
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Thank you for the overwhelming support of the Christmas Box and Dignity Bag initiative - please send any final contributions in on Monday.
Exams
Please keep track of your son to ensure that he arrives on time and properly groomed (clean-shaven and appropriate hairstyle) for every examination.
If your son misses and exam, kindly email the doctor's note to Mrs van Wyk (svanwyk@boyshigh.com) as soon as possible.

Your son should (and you can help him):
be writing constantly; boys cannot study without writing and so he should be writing and rewriting notes on a daily basis. (If you are worried about your son's academic performance, then I encourage you to ask to see these notes on a daily basis as evidence of his effort.)
be studying on his own, in a quiet space that is free from distractions.
not have his cellphone with him while he is studying; any important notes must be printed.
be eating well, sleeping enough (at least 8 hours per night) and doing some physical exercise for the duration of the exam period.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well. We are very proud of the 37 Abernethy men (more than any other house) who donated blood yesterday - each of these men have changed the lives of three people in desperate need!

Message
Your son should be dedicating at least one hour per day to exam preparation; this does not include daily homework and tasks. Studying or preparing for exams can only be done by writing - reading and highlighting are not effective study techniques. Your son should have set definite goals for these exams. Kindly discuss this with your son and ask to see his goals and the study notes that he is working on.
Best wishes to our matrics (and their parents) for the NSC exam period, which start on Monday!
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Message - The world is bigger than my reality
I encouraged the boys to look beyond their social groups and daily struggles to see that the human experience is not the same as "my experience". We are trying to raise good men are those who are considerate of others and more sensitive to the needs of others.
Notes
The boys should be making time to prepare for the upcoming exams on a daily basis.
The Social Outreach initiative this term is for Christmas Boxes and Dignity Bags; please see the attached picture for more information on how to support.

The Form I to IV November Exam timetable is attached.
Message - You are here to learn
The year-end examinations carry the majority of the weight in the year mark and this gives the boys an opportunity to lay a firm foundation for their academic future and rectify any results that are currently below their ability. I encouraged the boys to do three things in preparation:
Start today - allocate at least half an hour today to revising some concepts that will be examined.
Study by writing - read through the material and write down everything you do remember or understand; repeat this process.
Listen to your teachers - listen to the teachers for the next four weeks: they are giving important information about the exams and make use of the free extra lessons being offered by the school
Please discuss these points with your son and ensure that he starts today.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Reminders
Absenteeism: kindly email your son's tutor, if he is absent so that they can issue him with an absentee note upon his return.
Early departures: kindly email me <cstephens@boyshigh.com> if your son requires an early departure for an appointment that you were unable to book outside of school hours.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
You will be able to view your son's term 3 results on the SASPAC app from 15:00 this afternoon. If you have trouble with SASPAC, please contact Mrs Chapman (academic@boyshigh.com) before 12 today or at the start of next term.
Message - What do you have to show for the 11 weeks of term 3?
I encouraged the boys to reflect on the past eleven weeks, specifically how they spent their time. Many boys used this time to focus on their studies and boost their performance. Other boys dedicated themselves to a craft or discipline and grew. Other boys got out of their comfort zone, tried something new and emerged as better, more interesting men. I encourage you to discuss this term with your son and see what he has to show for this time.
I hope that you enjoy the time with your son at home.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Notes
The outreach initiative for canned food ends on Monday - I asked every boy to contribute one more can to this worthy cause. Thank you for the generous donations that we have received already.
All boys are to wear formal uniform to school tomorrow for the 50 Year On Reunion Assembly and all boys are to be in summer uniform from Monday onwards.
Message - Effective Communication
A part of effective communication is learning how to manage requests and information on multiple platforms. We try to keep communication as efficient as possible and want our boys to learn to read and respond immediately to any requests that they receive. Kindly address this with your son and explain the importance responding timeously to important messages and requests.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Notes
The 1st Soccer Team is playing at 12:45 on Saturday - all boys are encouraged to support this match.
The SNIA is presenting a workshop that aims to address the changing societal gender norms for men at 14:30 tomorrow afternoon in the Reeler Room; kindly encourage your son to attend.
Message - Good men should help others be better
I believe that the men of Abernethy House are more independent, better at dealing with their own problems, make better decisions on a daily basis when it comes to their own health and wellbeing, and are more generous and considerate of others. I know that this is true for most of our boys and so I challenged them today to start looking outwards to help others make better decisions, manage their lives better and be more considerate of those around them. There are still too many boys making poor decisions and we need good men play a more active role in the schooling environment.
I encourage you to discuss this with your son: is he making good decisions on a daily basis and, if so, what is he doing to help those around him do the same? Is he making poor decisions and, if so, who is he surrounding himself with and what path does he see himself following?
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Message - Honour
The Abernethy Afternoon last week went very well - it was great to see the boys having fun and enjoying community. There were a number of boys who did not arrive, despite being informed timeously and reminded regularly of this event since the start of the term. This failure to honour a commitment is a reflection on their character and speaks to the type of man they want to be - we are trying to raise men who organise their lives so that they always keep their commitments. What is more, these boys missed a golden opportunity to try something new and build relationships within their community. I encourage you to discuss this event with your son and help him see the value in honouring commitments, getting out of his comfort zone and strengthening relationships with his peers.
We are pleased to see so many boys eating the fruit that parents are providing for the registration venues; I encourage you to discuss your son's fruit intake with him.

Thank you for the generous response to our initiative to provide food to boys who do not bring food to school; the response has been very positive within the tutor groups!
Message
I shared a number of experiences that I have had in my life and encouraged the boys to seek discomfort as a way to grow and become a more interesting person. I encourage you to discuss your son's habits with him: what is the doing and reading that make him stand out from the crowd?

Message
We continue to focus on boys finding their own intrinsic motivation by asking the question "What kind of man do I want to be?". I related this to the way that the boys treat the women in their lives and encouraged them to acknowledge and celebrate these women more often.
I hope that you enjoy the long weekend and have a special women's day.

Message - Fuel for Success
We are becoming increasingly more concerned over the number of boys who do not eat breakfast and do not bring enough food to sustain them through the academic day and their extra-mural activities. Kindly ensure that your son eats a full breakfast before coming to school and packs enough food for a snack at first break and a meal at second break that will get him through his afternoon's activities. Some of our tutors have been bringing bags of apples in for the boys who do not bring food to school and we would like to expand this programme, since there is clearly a need. Please contact me if you would like to assist.

Message - Your actions today determine who you will be tomorrow
There are a number of boys who involved themselves fully, gave their best in all endeavours and excelled in the examinations (see a copy of one of these boy's tutor comment sheets). These boys sucked the marrow out of life and learnt valuable lessons about time management, hard work and discipline. There is another group of boys who did not get involved, seldom put their hands up to help and support the house or school and performed very poorly in the examinations. I explained to the boys that their daily decisions open and close doors to their future that they cannot perceive until it may be too late. The only way to discover hidden potential is to try new things (dancing, javelin, debating, etc.) and learn how to apply oneself to anything. I encourage you to discuss your son's future with him and ask him how his daily actions are contributing to the type of man he hopes to be.
The tutor and housemaster comments sheets will be handed to your son during registration tomorrow; kindly complete this form to confirm that you have received it.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens

The Form IVs gave House Assembly today and I encourage you to read the incredible speech that Luka Jovanovic prepared for the house.
Message - 50% is a pass in a competitive world
The internationally accepted pass mark is 50% - South Africans may pass matric with less, but in the global context they fall short. Many boys believe that they will be professional sportsmen or influencers and therefore do not need a matric certificate, and I hope that they achieve this dream, but there are roughly 25 000 professional footballers in the world (out of 250 million players) and only 12% of full time influencers make a living. I shared this with them to help them understand that a combination of incredible talent, unbelievably hard work and a fair amount of luck are required for success in these "high profile" careers and that school provides an opportunity for them to learn to work hard, especially at tasks that may not interest them.

The final term 2 reports will be issued at 14:00 today - please click this link to confirm that you have received this report; this link contains important information about the Parent-Teacher Consultations being held next week.
Our focus this term will be on creating an academic and athletic culture within the house. We will start the academic culture by creating opportunities to actively talk about the value of learning and celebrate academic progress. We will create an athletic culture by framing athleticism as the foundation for any physical endeavour - we will encourage boys to do long distance to improve stamina, sprints to improve speed or field events to improve explosive power and coordination. These skills will make them better sportsmen in any of their preferred sports.

Message - Read and Respond Immediately
We make an effort to ensure that our communication with boys (and parents) is always necessary and relevant. We expect our boys to read and respond to messages as they receive them and check the information that has been shared with them before they ask a question. I urge you to address this with your son and teach him how to manage his communication more effectively.

Theme: Commitment
It is our greatest commitments and responsibilities that give life meaning. Commitment means investing time and effort in a cause, especially when faced with challenges. I encouraged our boys to commit to becoming the best version of themselves: this means they should embrace every opportunity to learn, and every challenge that life throws at them.

The Social Outreach drive this term is for blankets and warm clothing; please assist us in teaching our boys how to give.
Theme for the Week: Wear your heart on your sleeve
Boys often believe that the way to protect oneself is to hide your feelings, pretend not to care and never to try too hard, because that way they will never be disappointed or embarrassed. I reminded the boys that meaning in life comes from the commitments that we make and that they have to stand for something, if they hope to make a mark and enjoy life to the fullest. This means that they must wear their hearts on their sleeves: be excited by the opportunities that they have, try new things, commit fully and care deeply.

Message - Show me your friends and I'll show you your future
I explained the importance of surrounding ourselves with people who make us want to be better versions of ourselves. I encouraged the boys to surround themselves with the right people and then learn to self-regulate (manage their behaviour and emotions) by helping each other. I encourage you to ask your son about his friends: are they kind, how are their marks, are they involved and are they positive and excited about life?

Message
I discussed Social Media in House Assembly today and focussed on smartphone notifications: notifications other than phone calls (sounds, vibrations, red dots, etc.) are attempts to capture (and monetise) our attention. There is growing awareness of a link between uncontrolled smartphone usage and a "low-level anxiety" that affects most people, but our youth in particular. This anxiety is caused by the constant exposure to countless people who appear to be better looking and having more fun than they are at present. I challenged the boys to turn off all notifications on their devices to take back control of their attention; I encourage you to ask your son about this address and hear what he took from it.

Message - Significance
Our juniors and seniors ended 4th in Inter House Cross Country last week, but our juniors (Forms I and II) lost to Solomon House (3rd) a margin so narrow that, had we had one more boy competing, we would have made history by being the first day boy house to beat a boarding house in the IH Cross Country. I tied this to our theme for the week: significance, by highlighting the fact that our involvement, effort or voice often appears insignificant when viewing an entire outcome, but we forget that the outcome is made up of every individual's results. Everything we do (and do not do) is significant, because it shapes our future and impacts on the lives of those around us.
Notes

Please send any final contributions towards the Social Outreach Stationery Drive to school with your son next week; thank you for the contributions that we have already received.
There has been an increasing number of items going missing on the school property; boys are reminded to make use of the areas that are monitored by cameras to store their belongings and check lost property for any items that do go missing. Thefts or suspected thefts must be reported to me by the boy, after he has been to check lost property.

Message - Nobody likes running
The Inter House Cross Country is the most important inter house event in the calendar to me, because it is the only event that requires the participation of every boy in the house. Very few boys enjoy running, but I am very proud to see most of our boys embrace the challenge and give their best - I see this as a reflection of their attitude towards all challenges in life. I encourage you to discuss your son's performance today with him and see how he approached this event.

I encourage you to discuss this with your son and ask him in what areas he is striving to be better.

Boys should not have a cellphone with them while they are studying or when they go to bed; I encourage you to enforce this to help your son fully capitalise on the time that he should be studying and sleeping.
The Form IIIs took house assembly this week.
Theme for the Week: Unstoppable
I spoke about being unstoppable in the face of challenges. I highlighted three common approaches people take when confronted with difficulties: avoiding them, seeking immediate help after a single failure, or persistently trying, learning from failures and continuing until success is achieved. The mantra of those who are unstoppable is encapsulated in the phrase, "I will prevail.".
I encourage you to discuss the challenges currently facing your son with him and finding out what he is doing to ensure that he prevails.
Notes
The Inter House Gala will be on Friday the 23rd of February from 18:00. Only cars with the 2024 Boys High sticker and boys in uniform will be allowed onto the property.

The Form IVs took house assembly this week.
Theme of the Week: Proactive
Being proactive means taking charge of situations rather than reacting to them. This includes early preparations for academic challenges, effective planning of daily schedules, optimising classroom time and communicating needs and changes in advance. It is a mindset focused on control and preparedness in all aspects of life. I encourage you discuss this with your son and help him see where he could be more proactive in his life.

Message - Consistency
Consistency involves behaving or performing consistently across all aspects of life, offering equal effort and attention to both passions and challenges. It means maintaining the same persona in various situations, even when tired or under pressure. Consistency is not resistant to change; rather, it is measured by how one responds to external circumstances and adapts accordingly. I encourage you to discuss consistency with your son and challenge him apply himself consistently across all aspects of life.

We welcomed the new boys and announced the Mentor-Mentee partnerships for 2024 in house assembly today.
Message - Grit
Grit is enduring determination to overcome challenges. Grit requires direct confrontation of obstacles and the embrace of failure as a source of feedback and learning. It is characterised by a commitment to growth, while acknowledging that grit is not synonymous with stubbornness or a fixed trait but rather a learned and practised quality. Grit also involves facing hardships with an awareness of emotions rather than denial of them.
I encourage you to discuss this with your son and ask him which challenges he hopes to overcome with more grit in 2024.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well. We welcome Ms Diana Erasmus to Abernethy House as our Pastoral Care tutor, Mr Jonty Matthys as the Form III tutor and Mrs Penny Vlag back as the language checker; we are happy to have them in our team and have no doubt that they will add value to our house and our boys.
Message - Better decisions, better habits, better men.
The Abernethy theme, "Better decision, better habits, better men," underscores our commitment to personal growth. We aim to empower boys to make better decisions that will become positive lifestyle habits and ultimately help them become good men. We hope to work with you towards this goal for our boys.
Notes
We believe that generosity of spirit is a learned habit. With this in mind, the Social Outreach initiative for this term is a drive for stationery that we give to give to various orphanages and places of safety that the Boys High community supports. I urge you to teach your son the value of giving back by supporting this drive.
We encourage you to get involved with the Parents Association to support the school; click this link to register.

Message
Our goal in Abernethy House is to raise healthy and independent young men. I encourage you to ask your son what his hopes for 2024 (and beyond) are and how he plans to turn these hopes into action; once we know what his plans are then we are able to support and guide him on his path. As part of our focus on wellness (both physical and emotional), we would appreciate your support in ensuring that every boy is involved in a sporting and a cultural activity at all times, as this speaks to our belief that healthy (and involved) bodies house healthy minds.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Arrangements for year-end report collections tomorrow:
Reports can be collected from the front of the main school building between 8:30 and 9:30
Boys may wear casual clothes
Parents may collect their son's report
If you wish to collect someone else's report, then you must bring a note from that person stating that you have permission to collect it (or the parents must email the housemaster stating who will be collecting the report)
All uncollected reports will be left at reception and can be collected in the course of next week
Thank you for your support of my team and me this year - we appreciate being able to work with you to raise independent young men.
I hope that you will enjoy quality time and good rest with your family over the festive season.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
We bid farewell to Mrs Vlag after 22 years of loyal service to Abernethy House in House Assembly yesterday and we thanked Mr Agriao for the outstanding job that he has done as the Form II tutor since Ms Gouws left in August - he will also be leaving us at the end of this year.
Notes
There may be no early departures on the 10th or 29th of November, on account of the special assemblies on these day - please plan accordingly
The end-of-year examinations start on Monday and we would appreciate your assistance in the following matters:
Check your son's timetable with him (take note of the changes on the 10th and 29th of November) leave timeously to ensure that he arrives early for every examination
Ensure that your son is clean-shaven, neatly dressed and has an appropriate hairstyle for the duration of the exam period
Help your son to remain physically healthy by eating well, sleeping enough and doing some exercise every day
If your son is absent for an examination, email the doctor's note to svanwyk@boyshigh.com
If your son has signed up for supervised study, then please ensure that he attends every day and do not allow him to make exceptions
If your son is not signed up for supervised study, kindly ensure that he is at school just before his exam begins and collected when it ends; he should not be left unsupervised on the property
Thank you in advance for your support and have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens

We were addressed by an old boy, Thabang Khatide, in house assembly today - thank you to Mr Orr for arranging this.
We are very proud of the following two Abernethy Men who earned the following special awards at the Valediction Ceremony on Monday night:
Takura Kufakunesu (2023 Head of House): Malcolm Armstrong Renaissance Man Award - this award is made annually to a pupil whose talents have earned them recognition in all three spheres of school life: academic, sporting and cultural, and who possesses a human compassion that will ensure that his talents are directed outwards towards service.
Joel Donkin: Gertrud Theiler Award - this award is made annually to an all-rounder who has shown the most diligence in their contributions to the life of the school.
As mentioned last week, we do our best to update you update your son's progress at school; please do not hesitate to contact us, if there is something that has happened at school or at home that you are concerned about or would like us to be aware of.

If your son requires an early departure, email me.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
I have attached a copy of the November Exam Timetable for Forms I to IV; please discuss the upcoming examinations with your son and help him plan for success.
Message - Drive
Your drive is your inner (intrinsic) determination to become something.
Drive is:
intrinsic - it comes from desire within and is not affected by what others say or do.
sacrificing your time and energy now for something that you desire later.
working towards a goal, not a reward.
Drive is not:
aimed at recognition, but rather improvement.
easily extinguished by what others say or do.
to get something you want, it is to get something you must have.
I would encourage you to discuss this with your son to find what drives him and how you can support him in this pursuit.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Reminders
If your son is absent, email your son's tutor to let them know.
If your son requires an early departure, email me.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Thank you for your generous contributions towards the Term 3 Social Outreach Initiative.
Notes
Tomorrow will start at 7:30 and boys will be issued with their Term 3 Reports just after 12:00. All uncollected reports will be left at reception.
The fourth term will start on Tuesday the 10th of October; kindly ensure that your son arrives at school with an appropriate hairstyle and an understanding of the importance and proximity of the end-of-year exams.
I hope that you will be able to enjoy some quality time with your sons over the holiday.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Notes
We are making an effort to improve our boys communication skills, particularly in responding to questions or polls on WhatsApp and via email. Kindly discuss this with your sons and emphasise the importance of responding to questions (about fixtures, events, etc.) immediately.
The school will be doing Bok Friday tomorrow; this is essentially a civvies day with South Africa-themed shirts.
We voted for the 2024 Abernethy House Prefects this week; I would encourage you to ask your son who he voted for and why, as this will give you an indication of how he sees leadership and what he values in his peers.
Tomorrow is the last day to bring canned or non-perishable food items for this term's outreach initiative.
Message - Maturity
Your maturity is defined by how you choose to respond to all aspects of life.
Maturity is:
knowing that discomfort is not death; discomfort is feedback that should promote growth or force change.
communicating well by responding honestly, clearly and timeously both verbally and digitally.
planning effectively to ensure that you keep your commitments and take others into account in your planning.
knowing what matters to you and being able to say no to your friends when you do not agree with them and shrug off comments from people who do not matter to you.
Maturity is not:
something that comes naturally with age: being allowed to vote and drive does not make you mature, taking these responsibilities seriously does.
being able to do what adults do: drinking, vaping and having sex do not make you mature, being able to do them responsibly does.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Notes
We are making a final push for the canned food initiative; please send a can of food to school with your son tomorrow morning; this will help us reach our goal of 200 cans from Abernethy House.
The uniform change-over period ends tomorrow; kindly ensure that your son wears summer uniform to school from Monday onwards.
We would like to avoid disagreements over hairstyles and and would appreciate your support; the code of conduct states: "There should not be a significant difference in length of the hair on the sides
and the top of the head.". Please help your son to get this right and feel free to discuss the hair policy with the deputy in charge of the hair committee, Mrs Holliday, if you have any concerns or queries.
The Form Is took house assembly today.
Message - Accountability
Being accountable means taking ownership of your decisions, actions and their consequences. Accountability is:
setting your own goals and following through with the necessary actions to achieve them.
accepting failure as an opportunity to learn and taking action to acknowledge mistakes, apologise and make amends.
Accountability is not:
blaming your teacher or coach for your results
blaming your friends for your behaviour
blaming your upbringing for your shortcomings
Personal accountability is the beginning of maturity and independence.
I would encourage you to discuss this with your son and show him how to be accountable.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
The Form IIs took house assembly today.
Message - You get what you give
The house was divided into "Pridelets" (a group consisting of 2 boys from each form) during tutor period yesterday and boys were asked to tell two truths and a lie about themselves. The purpose of this exercise was to give the boys an opportunity to get to know each other. Many of the boys made the most of this opportunity and shared something of themselves and got to know the boys in their house a bit better. Unfortunately, there were also boys who decided not to participate and rather sat on their own or with the same person they see every day.
I explained to the boys that yesterday's exercise, much like the entire Boys High (and life) experience is very similar: you cannot expect to learn, grow or change if you are not willing to try something new. I encourage you to discuss this with your son and help him get the most out of his life by getting out of his comfort zone.
Notes
The Abernethy boys will be playing football and touch rugby on Mulvenna from 16:00 to 17:00 tomorrow afternoon; all boys are welcome.
Thank you for your generous contributions to the canned and non-perishable food drive; please continue to send these donations in.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Message - 'tis here we learn to live
I reminded the house that the purpose of their schooling is to prepare them for life: they are here to learn how to learn, overcome obstacles, interact and communicate with a wide variety of people and care for those who are less fortunate than themselves. This all comes down to their attitude towards everything that the school (and life) offers - if they approach with a willingness to learn and grow then that is what they will get out. I encourage you to discuss this with your son and see what he is currently getting out of his schooling.
The Form IIIs took house assembly today.
Notes
The Dignity Bag* drive ends tomorrow - please contribute to this wonderful initiative, if you have not done so already. Thank you for the many contributions that we have already received.
The uniform change-over period starts on Monday the 28th of August: boys will be allowed to wear summer or winter uniform until Friday the 8th of September, thereafter summer uniform will be compulsory.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
* Dignity Bags for Victims of Rape (required: handbag, face cloth, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, bottle of water, shampoo, hair clips, deodorant, lip balm, sweets, body lotion, comb, small pack of tissues and a small notebook)
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well. Thank you for your generous contributions toward the Canned Food and Dignity Bag initiatives - we appreciate your support and the active role you are playing in teaching your son to care for those less fortunate than himself.
Notes
Join the Abernethy Community for the RCL Fun Run/Walk at 7:15 on Saturday morning - entries cost R60 and all proceeds go to charity.
Boys may not come in just to complete an assessment and then leave directly after - this is a school policy.
The Form IVs took house assembly today.
Message - Your marks reflect your attitude, not your intelligence.
Society often gives the incorrect impression that success or failure at school directly correlates with success or failure in life. I explained to the boys that one of the most important lessons that they can learn while at school is how to apply themselves to get a job done. This is easy to do when the pursuit interests us or the rewards are obvious, but there are often times in life when something needs to be done - whether we like it or not. I challenged our boys to approach their studies as a job that needs to be done, because this will teach them how to apply themselves to any future pursuits.
I hope to see you at the RCL Fun Walk on Saturday.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
The Form Vs took house assembly today; we welcomed Mr Marcelo Agriao to Abernethy House, he is replacing Ms Gouws as the Form II Tutor.
Message - Charity is learnt, not taught
A part of our goal in raising independent young men is showing them how to appreciate the privileges they have and be aware of those who are less privileged than them. We cannot tell our boys that they must care for others and appreciate what they have, we can only show them through our actions. With this in mind, there are a number of outreach initiatives and we would appreciate your support in showing our boys how to give. These are the current initiatives:
Canned and Non-Perishable Food Drive for shelters and orphanages in and around Pretoria
Dignity Bags for Victims of Rape (required: handbag, face cloth, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, bottle of water, shampoo, hair clips, deodorant, lip balm, sweets, body lotion, comb, small pack of tissues and a small notebook)
Blood Donations - 16 August (for boys and parents over 16 years old and 50 kg; click this link to sign up)
Bone Marrow Donor - 16 August (this is to be added to the registry - Bone Marrow matches are very rare and donations are not painful)
Bottle Caps and Bread Tags for Wheelchairs
Notes
Inter House Athletics starts at 8:30 on Saturday morning and ends at 14:30. This is a compulsory event for all boys - please ensure that your son is present and dressed appropriately (house shirt and green PT shorts with lace-up running shoes). I have attached the schedule and our team list; I encourage you to come support our boys.
We encourage your whole family to join the RCL Fun Walk on Saturday the 19th of August
Kindly email your son's tutor when your son is absent and email me if your son requires an early departure
Please note that it is school policy not to allow boys to come in to write an assessment and then leave

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
The Form Is took house assembly today. We also bid farewell to Ms Anneri Gouws, our Form II Tutor, as she heads to Bahrain for a very exciting opportunity and we wish her all the best for this adventure.
Message
I spoke to the boys about the discipline system and explained that this is mostly necessary when boys are unable to acknowledge their mistakes, because if they cannot admit to making a mistake then they will be unable to rectify their behaviour in future. It is therefore necessary to impose some sanction to create an association between their behaviour and a negative outcome. I expressed my frustration with the boys when their first response is "I didn't do it / It wasn't me" or to offer some excuse, because this shows an unwillingness to accept the consequences for their actions.
I challenged the boys to practice full accountability for their actions by responding with "I am sorry Ma'am/Sir, I was in the wrong and it will not happen again." and mean it. I encourage you to discuss this with your son and pay attention to his response when he is required to accept the consequences for his actions.
Notes
The Term 2 Reports will be issued at the end of the day; kindly complete this link to confirm that you have received the report and tutor comments
Inter House Athletics is on the 11th of 12th of August - please keep this weekend open so that your son can be there for Abernethy House
The RCL Fun Walk/Run is on Saturday the 19th of August - we would like to have the whole Abernethy support this event and would love to have you there
Kindly find the Term 3 Extra Lesson Schedule attached; these lessons are compulsory for boys who scored below 50% in Term 2 and I would recommend these lessons before resorting to private tutoring
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Message - Self-leadership
I explained to the boys that every one of us leads in in various aspects of our lives and very few of these positions come with a title and privileges. The most important way in which every one of us leads is in our group of friends (and community, by extension), because there are often people who are uncomfortable with a suggested course of action but they are not strong enough to say something. It is in these situations where it only takes one person to speak up and let the others know that they are not alone.
I would encourage you to discuss self-leadership with your sons: ask them which situations they find it difficult to stand up for what they know to be right. Vaping and other substance abuse are ongoing issues amongst teenagers and we need to equip our boys to make good decisions.
The Form IIs took house assembly today.
Notes
The RCL Fun Walk/Run is on Saturday the 19th of August - we would like to have the whole Abernethy support this event and would love to have you there

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well and that you were able to enjoy the time with your son at home over the holidays.
Message - Independence is
I spoke about fierce independence as taking pride in not having to be asked or reminded to do things. I then gave a number of concrete examples of how our boys can be more independent on a daily basis and asked them by show of hands to indicate how many of them were doing each of these:
Going to bed and waking up without a parent's intervention
Making their own breakfast and packing their own lunch
Checking their schedule, packing their bags and ensuring that they have all of the items that they need every day
Informing their family in advance of any changes to their schedule that may require additional planning
Unpacking their bags and packing everything away when they get home
Completing their homework
I encourage you give your son the opportunity to become more independent by expecting him to do these (and more) things for himself.
The prefects took house assembly yesterday.
Notes
Notify your son's tutor when he is absent and email me when you require an early departure.
Please do not contact our staff on their cellphone numbers.
Have a lovely weekend.

Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope that this email finds you well.
I hope that you will enjoy spending time with your son this holiday and that you and he will use this time to rest well, reflect on the first six months of the year (while taking the exam results into account), plan for the next six months and continue to build healthy habits that focus on physical and emotional well-being.
Notes
Your son's provisional exam results will be released via the SASPAC App at 14:00 tomorrow; your son will have an opportunity to review his exams upon his return to school and the final reports will be issued on the 4th of August.
I have attached the document explaining how to register for the SASPAC app to this email. Kindly note that you can only register with the email address that the school has for you and you must contact your son's tutor, if you wish to change this email address.
The third term will start at 7:30 on the 18th of July - please ensure that your son's winter uniform is neat and his hairstyle is appropriate.
Thank you for your support of my staff and me this term; we are privileged to work with you to help raise our boys into independent young men.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Thank you for your generous contributions to the Social Outreach drive for blankets and warm clothing!
Message - "Education is what you have, once you've forgotten what you were taught."
The purpose of schooling is to teach children how to learn and work hard. Performing badly at school does not mean someone is stupid, it means that they have not yet found their own way to learn and complete (often menial) tasks. I encouraged the boys to use these exams as an opportunity to assess their current way of learning and try something new, if they are not happy with the results that they are currently getting.
I would encourage you to discuss your son's education with him and help him understand the importance of finding his own way of working efficiently.
Notes
Kindly ensure that your son arrives on time for every examination and that he does not miss an exam by misreading his timetable.
There is a document attached that relates to substance abuse in teenagers; I would encourage you to read through this.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
The Form IIIs took house assembly today.
Message
I spoke to the boys about etiquette today: I emphasised the importance of giving the people you are with your undivided attention; this means putting your phone away (not face-down in front of you) so that you can connect with the person or people in front of you.
I encourage you to discuss this with your son and help him learn to connect with people face-to-face.
Notes
The exams are a little over a week away and I encourage you to discuss your son's preparation and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout the exam period with him.
Kindly start the subject line of any email to use with your son's name and surname. Email your son's tutor when he is absent and email me for an early departure note.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
The Form 3s, 4s and 5s were addressed by Mr Badenhorst from IIE Varsity College in House Assembly this morning. He gave the boys some information about Varsity College and shared a more general message about the future of work and the importance of experience and valuable skills in differentiating oneself from the crowd. The Form Is and IIs spent some time getting to know each other and playing soccer on Shalang Field.
Notes
Thank you for the generous donations of blankets and warm clothing; next week will be the last week to bring these in.
If you have not yet returned the letter regarding supervised study, please complete it and email it to your son's tutor.
Complete the Report Reply Slip Form, if you have not done so already.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Message
I explained the importance of being absolutely honest in situations where a mistake has been made or a line has been crossed, because that distinguishes a boy who knows that he was wrong and is willing to accept the consequences from one who cannot be trusted. It is very difficult to work with a person who has been dishonest, since they cannot always be taken at their word. I would encourage you to discuss this with your sons and reiterate the importance of honesty at all times, but particularly when something has gone wrong.
The Form IVs took House Assembly today.

Please contribute towards the Social Outreach initiative for blankets and warm clothing.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
We are very proud of the entire cast who made the Abernethy House Play possible. The result was not what we had hoped for, but this does not detract from the quality of the production, the effort that went into it or the enjoyment that the cast and audience gained from it.
Message
I am repeating a message from last year, as it remains important and is a simple way to improve our children's quality of life. I urge you to read through this, particularly the last point about cell phones in the bedroom.
There is a mountain of research highlighting the importance of sleep for teenagers. The benefits of enough quality sleep include:
Better academic achievement - this is a result of boys being able to pay attention in class when they are well-rested and their brains are better able to consolidate new information when they have enough sleep.
Better physical development - sleep aids recovery and growth from physical activity and there have been links found between sleep quality and a reduction in weight-related issues.
Better emotional health - the above-mentioned benefits combine with well-rested children generally feeling better and contribute to improved mental health.
Most published research agrees that teenagers need between 8 and 10 hours of uninterrupted (quality) sleep per night. Here are some of the most common and simplest methods to improve the quality of your son's sleep:
Set your son's bedtime based on his daily waking time. For example, if your son needs to wake up at 05:30 every morning then his bedtime should be between 19:30 and 21:30. This bedtime must remain constant to establish a healthy sleeping pattern.
Your son should sleep in a cool (not warm) and dark room.
Your son should have no screen-time in the 30 minutes before going to bed.
Your son should not have a cell phone (or any other device) in his bedroom between bedtime and waking time. The main reason for this is to limit distractions and scrolling that delays or interrupts sleep, but this has the added benefit of restricting unmonitored access to pornography and various other anti-social behaviours.
Notes
Term 1 reports were issued today, complete this link to confirm that you have seen this report by Monday
Parent-teacher consultations are on Wednesday the 3rd of May from 17:00 until 19:00; ask your son to make a booking or email the teachers that you would like to see.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well. I apologise for the length of this email and the number of attachments; there is a lot that we would like you to be aware of.
One of our Form V boys, Ashton Theron is the chairman of the Fantasy Wargames Society and they have put together an initiative to collect board and card games and then donate these to various orphanages around the city and teach them to play these games. We encourage you to contribute to this wonderful initiative, either by donating some games you have around the house or any new game you think the children will enjoy.
The prefects took House Assembly today.
Message
I shared my experience at the dermatologist with the boys today. At my most recent visit she told me that there is a big risk of developing numerous basal cell carcinomas as a result of the sun damage that was done to my skin in the first 20 years of my life. I used this to make two points:
The decisions we make and actions we take (and do not take) will affect us for the rest of our lives and often in unintended or unexpected ways. We must consider our actions very carefully, because we will have to live with the consequences for the rest of our lives.
We must all look after our skin and use sun protection as often as possible. This is not limited to people with pale skin; all skin can be damaged, but the damage is more visible on some.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
There are 27 teaching days before the mid-year examinations. We are encouraging our boys to manage their time effectively to ensure that they stay on top of the current work while revising the work that was covered in the first term to set themselves up for success in the exams.
We are renewing our efforts to create independent young men this term and urge you to give your son space to learn and solve problems independently while expecting him to take full responsibility for his actions and their consequences.
Notes
If your son is absent, please email his tutor and it is your son's responsibility to email his teachers (https://boyshigh.com/contact-us/) and find out what work he misses.
If your son requires an early departure, please email me.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
The last House Assembly of the term was used to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of the men of Abernethy.
Notes
Boys are to wear their house kit (Abernethy Shirt, Green PT Shorts and closed shoes) to school tomorrow. The day starts at 7:30 and ends with them getting their draft reports at 12:00.
Reports: draft reports will be issued at the end of the day tomorrow; kindly take note of the following:
Reports can only be collected in person tomorrow. Uncollected reports will be available from reception through the course of the holidays.
These are draft reports: if there is an error then your son must correct it with his teacher at the start of next term.
These reports reflect your son's progress in the first term. Discuss these results with him and ensure that he is prepared and organised to rectify these results next term, if need be.
Use the attached Promotion Requirements document to ensure that your son has met the promotion requirements.
Complete this form to acknowledge receipt of your son's report.
If you are ever uncertain about something you hear from your son about the school, our calendar or the way in which things are done here, please do not hesitate to contact us immediately to ensure that we are all on the same page.
Message
The management of the Abernethy Point System requires us to manually enter points for boys for their involvement in school activities and for their academic average at the end of each term. While completing this process this week, we were struck by the fact that boys who are fully involved are the same ones who earn points for their academic achievement and these are the boys with whom we have fewer discipline issues. I encourage you to use the Abernethy Viewing Document to monitor your son's involvement in school activities and attendance at extra lessons.
Thank you for your support of my staff and me this term; it is a joy to work with you to turn these boys into independent young men. I hope that you will have a break and enjoy spending time with your son.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Notes
The 1st Hockey team is playing at 18:30 tomorrow night (support in PT kit) and the 1st Rugby team is playing at 12:30 on Saturday (support in formals). We would love to have the whole school supporting these fixtures to start the Winter Sports Season off on a high.
There are a number of important events next week (St Stithians fixture, IH Basketball, Water Polo, Debating and Squash) in addition to the academic programme that will continue as per usual; please do not let your son convince you that he should stay at home.
Physical reports will be issued after the Market Day on Friday the 24th of March; these will not be emailed to you.
Have a lovely long weekend.
Kind regards

I spoke to the boys about independence today and reminded them that we provide them with the opportunity to learn, be physically healthy (sport), broaden their minds (culture) and learn to give back (outreach). They should strive to fully utilitise the available resources to develop themselves into balanced young men.
An education at Pretoria Boys High School costs in excess of R65 000 per year - I would encourage you to ensure that your son is making use of all the resources that make this school unique.

Kindly keep all school-related communication via email or request a phone call, please do not contact my staff or me on our personal numbers.
We will be having an Abernethy Afternoon on Friday the 10th of March from 14:00 until 17:00 - we will have a braai for lunch and then play a quiz.
Tomorrow is the last day to bring any items for the Term I Stationery Drive - please send something in, if you have not done so already.

Notes
It is school policy that boys may not come to school to write a test and then leave immediately after the test, because a boy who is not well enough to attend a full day at school should not be expected to write a test.
The promotion requirements for Forms I - V are attached to this email, for your information.

Message - Thank you for working with us.
We are frequently in contact with parents, mostly in an attempt to keep in contact and share some of what is happening at this school; but sometimes for disciplinary reasons when a boy has gotten it wrong. I had such an interaction (at the end of the email) with a parent over the weekend while I was on squash tour and it reminded me what a pleasure it is to work with parents towards the common goal of helping our boys grow into good men. This is a note of thanks to the parents for your support of us and our mutual goal.
Kind regards

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
This week saw the first of our Form IV boys start the growth process that will end with them taking over the leadership of the house at the end of the year. The first step in this process is for each of them to give a speech entitled "My Advice to You" to the Form Is, IIs and IIIs during registration. This is a great opportunity for them to reflect on their lives and practice their public speaking, while it gives the rest of the house an opportunity to get to know the boys and hear some practical advice.
Follow this highlight reel for daily updates on these speeches: https://www.instagram.com/stories/highlights/17977295098975579/
The Annual IH Cross Country Race took place this morning and I was very pleased to see almost all of the Abernethy Boys taking part and giving it their all. See here for some photos of our boys in action: https://www.instagram.com/stories/abernethy_house/3034257748078636123/
Notes
Kindly email me if your son requires an early departure and email your son's tutor when your son is absent.
Message
The build-up to Inter House Cross Country this year has raised awareness for the number of unhealthy boys in our house. I do not expect every boy to be a running champion or a superstar on the sports field, but I do believe that any healthy teenage boy should be able to complete a 4.4 km run / walk under 35 minutes. We want our young men to be physically and mentally healthy and these are not independent - good physical health supports good mental and emotional health. Kindly discuss your son's results with him and reitterate the importance of balance in all spheres of life.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust this email finds you well.
Congratulations to all of the Abernethy boys who were acknowledged for academic excellence in 2022 in assembly last Friday - we are very proud of them! Find out more here: https://instagram.com/stories/abernethy_house/3029360006047171258?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=
Notes
I had a look at a number of diaries during registration this week and was disappointed to see how few of them use their diaries at all. I encourage you to have a look through your son's diary to get an idea of how your son organises his life on a daily basis.
Inter House Cross Country is being run on Thursday the 7th of February - houses earn points based on the number of runners they have and penalised for every boy who does not run. In effect, a boy who walks the race and ends last will earn more points for his house than a boy who does not participate at all. Most boys are reluctant to run, but we would like our boys to show their dedication to the house and perseverance through some hardship for the good of the house - kindly discuss this with your son so that he can do his part for Abernethy House.
Find the details for the weekly extra lessons (support structures) attached and encourage your son to make use of these before you incur the expense of a private tutor.
We received a number of responses for the offer to join the learn-to-swim programme - if you would still like your son to be included in the fun and life-saving programme, kindly complete the attached form and send it to abolduc@boyshigh.com.
Find a newsletter from the Psychology Department attached.
Kindly continue to encourage your son to become an independent young man by allowing him to solve his own problems and find information for himself, before you intervene on his behalf.

Message
A great deal of communication within the school happens via WhatsApp and I encouraged the boys to learn to respond to questions immediately and then be men of their word and honour their commitments.
I spoke about recent advances in AI, demonstrated by ChatGPT and encouraged the boys to gain an understanding for this new technology before it passes them by. I encouraged them to spend some time coming to terms with the capabilities of this new technology - its impressive abilities, but also its shortcomings.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this email finds you well.
Notes
Kindly let us know of any major events in your family that may impact on your son's well-being in any way. I make this request for two reasons, firstly because it enables us to do a better job of looking after your son if we have a better idea of what is happening at home and, secondly, because the school has various resources that we will gladly use to assist you and your son.
Swimming is a life skill that is not only fun, but it can literally save lives. We would like to ensure that every boy in Abernethy House is able to swim by the end of 2023 and will be using the school's learn-to-swim programme to make this possible. If your son is unable to swim or not a particularly strong swimmer, please reply to this email and I will ensure that he is included in this programme.
The school day starts strictly at 7:30 - kindly ensure that your son arrives at school with enough time to get to his registration venue in time.
The Term 1 Test Schedule is attached to this email. Do not wait for the test results to get an idea of how your son is doing, the best indication you can get is by looking through each of his workbooks to get an idea of the quantity and quality of the work that he is doing.
House Assembly: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn3-_AhNzCM/
Message - You become an independent young man when you manage your own schedule and fight your own battles.
I encouraged boys to stop letting their parents contact their teachers and coaches for information that has already been shared with the boys. They need to become independent and start taking responsibility for their own schedule, homework and classwork; please do not enable your son by organising his life and fighting his battles for him.
With this in mind we have prepared a short document on how to use a page-a-day diary and how to prepare properly for tests (attached) that the tutors will share with the boys in registration tomorrow. Kindly discuss this with your son and encourage him to take ownership of his life.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Upcoming
27 January: New Parents Braai for all new parents
10 March: Abernethy Afternoon - please ensure that your son is able to attend this event from 14:00 until 17:00.
Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this email finds you well.
Notes
We encourage you attend the Inter House Gala tomorrow evening - it starts at 18:00 and is expected to end by 19:45. All boys are to meet on Shalang Field at 16:50 and they must wear their Abernethy Shirts (new boys were given their shirts in House Assembly today), black shorts and closed running shoes.
Kindly start the subject line of any email to use with your son's name and surname. Email your son's tutor when he is absent and email me for an early departure note.
Please join the parents' WhatsApp groups, if you have not done so already. The links are below.
Inter House Cross Country is on the 7th of February - encourage your son to join the house runs and various running challenges that we have in Abernethy House!

We welcomed our new staff member (Mrs Gouws), Form V boy (Chad Burger), Form III boy (Khumo Thubane), Form II boy (Khosi Mmutle) and Form Is to Abernethy House and announced the Mentor-Mentee allocations for 2023 in House Assembly today.
Message - There's no such thing as a dragon.
I shared a story that I read to my daughter with the boys in house assembly today about a boy and his mom who fail to acknowledge the existence of an ever-growing dragon in their house. The dragon grows larger and does increasingly more damage until they are forced to acknowledge the dragon's existence, at which point the dragon immediately starts to shrink. The dragon represents the challenges that we face on a daily basis and we would be wise deal with these while they are small and manageable, rather than ignore the problem until it consumes us.
I encouraged the boys to apply this philosophy to their studies (based on their end-of-year results), their physical health and their interpersonal relationships. I would encourage you to discuss this with your son and teach him to address his own dragons, rather than doing it for him.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well and I wish you and your family all the best for 2023!
School will start with an assembly at 7:30 on Wednesday the 11th of January - please ensure that your son is dressed in Summer Uniform (with polished shoes) and that his hairstyle aligns with the school's Code of Conduct. Form Is will meet in front of the school at 7:30 for the start of their Orientation Programme.
Notes
Your son's tutor should be your first point of contact with any queries that you have; please make contact with the tutor for all general queries and contact me with larger issues.
If your son is absent, please email his tutor so that the tutor can issue an absentee note upon his return to school.
If your son requires an early departure, please email me more than 24 hours before the departure date so that I can arrange his departure slip with reception.
You are advised to label all your son's belongings clearly; that way they will be easy to identify at lost property.

Notes
Kindly ensure that your son has a A5 page-a-day diary for his return to school next year. We would like to help the boys manage their time better and the school diary does not support this.
The 2023 school year starts at 7:30 on Wednesday the 11th of January; kindly ensure that your son has an appropriate hairstyle and all the necessary uniform and stationery items to start the year off on the right note.
Report collections will be from 8:30 to 9:30 on Friday the 9th of December; there is no dress code for these collections and boys must bring written permission if they wish to collect a report on behalf of a friend. Please encourage your son to thank his tutor (and teachers) properly for the past year.
The Abernethy Website can be accessed for information on any Abernethy-related matters: https://sites.google.com/boyshigh.com/abernethy-house/home
Thank you for your support of my staff and me this year - we love guiding our boys as they grow into independent young men and appreciate that we can work with you towards this goal.
I wish you all a blessed festive season and hope that you will be able to rest well and enjoy quality time with your family.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this email finds you well.
Thank you
Thank you all for the very generous donations that you have made throughout the course of the year - it is important for our boys to learn to be generous with what they have and the Abernethy community's contributions have set an excellent example to them.
Exams
Please take some time over the weekend to discuss the upcoming exams with your son; it is important that he has set up a study schedule that includes time to study, rest, exercise and sleep enough to remain physically and emotionally healthy over the next four weeks.
The following advice was shared with the boys, encourage them to apply this to their studies:
Create a schedule: work for 45 minutes, rest for 15 minutes.
Study by writing - not just reading or highlighting
Leave your cell phone in another room while you are studying.
Do some exercise every day to maintain balance.
Ensure that you get 8 hours of sleep the night before an exam.
Abernethy Points System
The Point System underwent some major changes in the past week; this was mainly a result of a number of blind spots that we noticed through the course of the year, together with the suggestions to improve the system that we received from the new prefects. This unfortunately meant that all scores had to be reset to zero last week, but this is a one-time reset (not an annual one) and we believe that it was necessary it to implement the changes fairly. Please see the attached document for more information about Abernethy Point System.
Progress
On paper it may look like Abernethy House performed poorly in 2022, because our performance in the inter house trophies left much to be desired. We are not happy with these results and have made changes that will seek to learn from and improve on these results in 2023. However, I believe that this year was a success in the following ways:
Abernethy contributed the most when it came to the outreach initiatives, market days and blood donations every term.
There was only one inter house event this year in which Abernethy failed to field a complete team. This is a drastic improvement on previous years.
The boys in Abernethy House have become more independent when it comes to solving their own problems.
The boys in Abernethy House have bought in to the systems in the school and the house and started taking initiative to solve problems, improve aspects that could be better and innovate to find new ways of doing things.
We believe that 2022 has been a foundation year that will enable us to continue building into 2023 and beyond.
I wish you and your family well as you support your children through the upcoming exams. In particular, we wish our Abernethy Form Vs well in the NSC Examinations.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Notes
Congratulations to Mr Nixon on his appointment to the position of Senior Housemaster for Armstrong House - we celebrate this promotion with him and have no doubt that he will add value in his new position!
We are very excited about the new Abernethy House Prefects that the house selected and appreciate the energy and enthusiasm with which they have entered this new office.
Please support the Social Outreach initiative to collect Christmas boxes for girls under 12 in the nearby orphanages.
The Abernethy Point System has been reset on account of a number of changes that have been made to the scoring process - we are in the process of finalising a document that will simply explain the entire system.

Message
I spoke about the importance of the upcoming exams and the value of the next six days in class: all teachers are focused on helping the boys succeed in the upcoming exams and will be doing revision that is specifically relevant to the exam questions. I encouraged them to plan properly (using the attached study planner) and work as hard as possible in the next five weeks, so they can enjoy the following 7 week-long holiday knowing that they did their best and made the most out of 2022.
Finally, I asked the boys to make time next week to thank all their teachers properly and encouraged them to make a special effort to show their appreciation for those teachers who have gone out of their way to assist them this year.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this email finds you well.
I would like to start by thanking the Form III group and their parents for their contributions toward the Market Day at the end of last term - Abernethy raised the most money by a considerable margin! Particular thanks must go to Ms. du Preez and the Exter family (Spout Coffee Company) for their incredibly generous support.
Notices
Boys High offers a learn-to-swim programme on Wednesday and Friday afternoons - I strongly encourage you to register your son for these lessons, if he does not know how to swim - this is a life skill and a safety precaution that he should not go without.
We welcome Mr Stevens to Abernethy House (Form IV Tutor) as he will be standing in for Mrs Nel while she is on maternity leave. He is in the process of completing his PhD and we look forward to getting to know him better in the months ahead. His email address is dstevens@boyshigh.com.
The year-end examinations are a little over three weeks away - we will be focussing on exam preparation and holistic health with the boys next week. I encourage you to do the same.
We continue to encourage our boys to become independent young men - please let them learn to solve their own problems.
Message and Final House Assembly (https://www.instagram.com/p/Cjp7ME7NP5W/)

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well. Please take the time to read through the message that follows - I believe that this will help improve our boys' well-being.
Message - Sleep is your superpower.
There is a mountain of research supporting the importance of sleep for teenagers.
This information was shared with your son during house assembly today; please consider implementing this with your son to help him to take advantage of the many benefits of better sleep.

Notices
Thank you for all the non-perishable food donations to this term's outreach initiative. We are still collecting bread tags and bottle caps.
Please ensure that your son's hair conforms to the school's code of conduct. The procedure for inappropriate hairstyles is as follows:
Hair too long - a boy will be given two days to cut his hair.
Inappropriate hairstyle (most often a significant difference between the length on the sides and top) - a boy will have his tie (and blazer) removed, sit break detention and be expected to rectify his hairstyle on that day. He will not be allowed to return to school until his hair conforms to the school's code of conduct.
Have a lovely weekend.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this email finds you well.
Message - No talent required.
The following habits require zero talent: arriving on time, working hard, being coachable and having a positive attitude. I encouraged the boys to see that they can get a long way at anything they set their minds to if they apply these four habits.
Private tutors are a dangerous habit to become accustomed to, because if a private tutor is necessary at a school like Boys High with all the additional support structures that we offer, then it leads to a private tutor being required at every subsequent stage. This is because the vital self-sufficiency and learning to make use of the available resources is a skill to be learnt.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Message - Stop talking about change and start doing change.
Only 50 out of the 140 boys in Forms I to IV completed the 4 km run required in August. They have said that they want to beat a boarding house in the 2023 IH Cross Country and I explained to them that these things are easy to say, but can only be achieved when the talk becomes action and then becomes consistent.

Notes and Requests
I encouraged boys to place their diary on their desk in every lesson they attend; this way it will be easier for them to make note of any homework or upcoming tests. Kindly inspect your son's diary and discuss the importance of writing things down and planning ahead with him.
Please support the outreach initiative for canned and other non-perishable foods.
When contacting me or your son's tutor, kindly start the subject line with your son's name and surname, for example: "Adam Johnson - Early Departure".
Please remember to contact your son's tutor when he is absent and me for an early departure.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Thank you for the kind messages and support that you offer me and my staff - we appreciate it and are glad to be working with you.
Message - The difference between complaining and being constructive is who you approach.
I encouraged the boys to address their concerns to someone who is able to help them solve the problem - if they have a problem with a specific subject or area then they must approach the teacher or person in charge who can help them solve the problem, not complain to everyone else who is powerless to address the issue.
Please discuss this with their sons and teach them to take up issues with those who can affect change, instead of just complaining.

Thank you for your support - we are trying to communicate with you as often as possible and appreciate the fact that we can work together to grow our boys into good men.

I encouraged the boys to be more selective in how they use their energy: they should allocate time and energy to the people and causes that they value and avoid wasting energy on toxic relationships. The message today was a simple one: we need to be men of our word - when we say we will do something or be somewhere then that is what we do. I also encouraged the boys to learn to do tasks when they get them, not when they are due.

Dear Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Message
The school was addressed by Luke Lamprecht on Wednesday this week on the topic of substance abuse. His message was simple: Between the ages of 14 and 25 a young man's brain undergoes "neural (synaptic) pruning" , a process during which neural pathways are either formed and solidified or eliminated. Every action either enforces or removes a pathway that becomes a fixed part of a person by the age of 25. Substance abuse (this includes vaping and alcohol consumption) has a huge effect on this process, because it destabilises the chemical balance within the developing brain at a time when habits (and addictions) can be easily formed.
I would strongly advise that you discuss this address with your son, since vaping is common and popular in our teens at the moment.

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well. I am constantly looking for ways to improve our communication and will try to shorten these emails henceforth. Please follow Abernethy House on Instagram for more information about each house assembly and the Lion Heart Awards each week (https://www.instagram.com/abernethy_house/).
Message
There were three interactions this week that highlighted some important character traits that I would like to see more of in our Abernethy Boys:
I was approached by a boy who noticed an overlap in his calendar and he came to me excuse himself from the Abernethy activity and make arrangements to catch up what he missed. I reminded our boys that many issues can be resolved long before they become problems.
One of our form four boys took a chance by bunking a subs lesson on Tuesday. When he was found out and confronted, he owned up immediately and told the truth. We expect teenage boys to by naughty and push the boundaries, but similarly expect boys show the strength of character to be honest and accept the consequences for their actions when the time comes.
We have been in contact with a number of parents and boys about the second-term results (thank you, Mrs Botha) and it is important for our boys (and parents) to realise that a person's potential is meaningless if they fail to act on it. I feel that many of our boys enjoy hearing that "He has the ability, he must just apply himself.", because it lets them believe that having ability is good enough: having ability is easy, learning to use it is the difficult part.
Requests
When contacting me or your son's tutor, kindly start the subject line with your son's name and surname, for example: "Adam Johnson - Early Departure".
We are making a big effort to ensure that boys who scored below 50% for a particular subject in the second term attend extra lessons; please use the attached document to help your son plan and manage his attendance at the lessons.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens

Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this email finds you well and that you were able to enjoy some quality time with your son over the holiday. I went to Scotland for my brother's wedding and enjoyed the opportunity to experience a bit of his life in the UK.
Notes
All boys who scored less than 50% for a subject are expected to attend the school's extra lessons, which will resume next week.
Donations toward the charity drive will only be accepted during tutor periods on Wednesdays from now on.

Abernethy's academic results did not improve relative to the first term, despite the multitude of additional support systems we put in place for our boys; this highlighted two important points for us:
Since poor academic performance is generally more of an indication of attitude than ability, it will take longer to create and see positive change. We will continue offer all the support we believe is necessary and provide opportunities for boys to grow their character.
Each boy is responsible for his own results - additional support measures can only do so much and, ultimately, it comes down to whether he pays attention in class and spends the necessary amount of time studying.
House Assembly (https://www.instagram.com/p/CgR0EYtNvgL/)
Ben Janse van Rensburg spoke about the legacy that he hopes to leave and challenged the boys to consider the legacy that they are leaving through their daily actions. Andrew Holdt presented the Lion Heart Awards, Taku Sabeta did the reading and Damola Yusuff read the notices.
Congratulations
We are very proud of the following boys for election to the 3rd term duty panel:
Kai Bakker
Joel Donkin
Broden Exter
Ivor Magill
Stewart Pringle
Andrej Ristic
Lion Heart
Ruben Dixon - taking up rugby despite being in the 1st soccer team, to set an example of involvement and starting in the 5th rugby team and now playing for the 1st team
David de Lange - went skydiving for the first time
Bernard Warnich - cast 120 m
Ivor Magill - shooting his first kudu
Lethabo Phawe - growing an inch taller
Mr Kowlaser - giving up two days of his holiday for the house play
Kind regards

Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this email finds you well.
I would like to thank the Abernethy community: staff, parents and boys, for the outstanding support of what we are doing in this house - we are a team and I hope that it is evident through all the communication that we are working together to create the next generation of good men.
We would particularly like to thank Ms. Lesego Garegae and Mr Viljoen du Plessis for their generous donations toward completing the first set of badges for the boys (https://www.instagram.com/p/CfGaxVTN_RA/). We would also like to thank Ms. Elsie Snyman-Ferreira for sharing the attached document about subject choices for us.
Digital reports will be issued tomorrow (Friday 25 June). Kindly ensure that view and discuss this report with your son before his return to school so that we can hit the ground running in the third term. Please consider the following when reviewing these results:
Your son's results are a reflection of his understanding and work ethic at the half-way point this year. If he does not accept this fact and instead makes excuses for these results without accepting responsibility, then there is no way to adjust course for the remainder of the year.
Discuss these results with him and be sure to include the following in this discussion: where does he sit in class, with whom does he sit in class (how do their marks look), has he made use of the available resources on Google Classroom, has he attended any of the extra lessons offered by the school and has he made any attempt to ask his teacher for assistance?
Ask to see his workbook to get an idea of the amount and quality of work that he has been doing. Many parents want to see their son's assessments and you may ask your son to take pictures of his assessments (his teachers should not have a problem with this) and show these to you, but you will get a better idea of your son's day-to-day activity by reviewing his workbook.
If you have any subject-specific questions, then contact his teacher directly (all staff email addresses: https://boyshigh.com/contact-us/). If you make contact with the teacher, be sure to ask about your son's behaviour, work ethic and attitude towards their subject in their class.
The physical reports (with comments) will be issued in August, please do not wait for these to help your son adjust course, if need be.
The counselling department will be offering a number of study skills workshops in the third term, contact Mrs Barnard (dbarnard@boyshigh.com) directly if you wish to register your son for this workshop.
In order to be proactive about preparation for inter-house events and to make selective communication more effective we have created groups that the boys were encouraged to join if they are a part of that activity at Boys High. These groups will not be used all the time, but will make it easier to get in touch with the right boys when the time comes. Kindly discuss these groups with your son and ask him which groups he has joined.
I trust that you will enjoy the time at home with your sons over the holiday and look forward to welcoming everyone back at the start of the 3rd Term. Our theme for the 3rd term will be: "The choices you make today, determine who you are tomorrow."
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.

This Saturday (4 June) is Founder's Day at Pretoria Boys High School and we would like to have a full stand to support the 1st Rugby and Hockey matches. Encourage your son plan his studying so that he can be there on Saturday.
There have been too many boys who have arrived late or missed their exams entirely this week. We encourage our boys to take responsibility for their actions and plan their own lives and would encourage you to discuss each upcoming week with your son and teach him to integrate his studies with the rest of his life so that he can maintain balance while staying on top of his studies.
I have attached an image I shared with the boys at the start of the week that gives some basic advice for the exam period. Kindly discuss these points with your son to monitor his progress and assist where possible.

The staff were privileged to be addressed by Luke Lamprecht during our staff development session on Monday. The topic of his address to us was "Duty of Care" and he spoke about the immense responsibility that we have in providing a safe learning space for the children in our care.
During this address he touched on some of the greatest dangers in our children's lives:
1. The dangers of allowing a child unfettered and unmonitored access to social media.
2. The danger of increased engagement with pornography and the escalation of this engagement to increasingly more violent material and behaviour.
He referred us to a documentary (https://youtu.be/He3IJJhFy-I) for more information and from this and some further reading I have started preparing a number of addresses for next term that will focus on these issues.
I would encourage you to open these topics for discussion with your son and remind him that there is always help available.
We would also love to get Luke Lamprecht to come and address the Abernethy Community (boys and parents) and will be looking into ways to make this possible.
Thank you
We would like to thank Ms. Aniré van der Walt for her contribution to the Abernethy House badges. There is one more set of badges that we would like to have made, please contact me if you would like to contribute.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Notes
We are very grateful to Mr Oldnall and the School House PA for inviting us to join the Stephen McGown address on the 16th of May. Stephen McGown told the incredible story of his 6 years as a hostage of Al Qaeda and the lessons he learnt along the way. I am pleased that a number of Abernethy boys and parents were able to hear this address.
I reminded the boys today that a brown belt is required as part of the winter uniform - kindly ensure that your son has a brown belt to wear.
I asked a number of boys to have their hair cut before the exams start on Tuesday and encouraged them to learn to self-regulate - meaning that they should know when their hair is getting too long and have it cut in accordance with the school's code of conduct without having to be asked to do so.
Kindly find attached the exam briefing presentation that was covered in tutor period yesterday, the supervised study rules and a document with information about the Allxs student cards.
Message
I addressed the upcoming exams and the importance of taking responsibility for their results: this means understanding that they alone will bear the consequences for the preparation that they do or do not do and they must embrace that and own their process. Abernethy men do not make excuses or blame others for the consequences of their actions.
I also addressed the 40-days incident that took place on Friday last week when a number of matric boys bunked assembly or some lessons. I spoke about my disappointment that so many boys displayed such poor judgement by deciding to follow a group of their peers at a time when their focus should be on the upcoming examinations. I hope that in future the men of Abernethy House will be leaders who not only do what is right, but encourage those around them to do the same.

Simphiwe Petros addressed the Abernethy Lions in House Assembly today. He shared his story of the 14 years since leaving school and he focussed on many of the initial failures that he had in this time that ultimately led to growth. His message was simple: we must ensure that every decision we make is our own decision, as we are the ones who must live with the consequences.
The Form Vs handled the formalities with Dieter Snyckers proposing the vote of thanks, Ben Janse van Rensburg presenting the reading and prayer, Thando Mahlangu presenting the Lion Heart Awards and Damola Yusuff reading the notices.
I trust that you will have a peaceful weekend.

Abernethy House placed 3rd in Inter-House Art. We are very proud of all our boys' contributions and would like to acknowledge Liam Pretorius for his drawing that placed 2nd and Stephan Jonker for his painting that placed 5th. (https://www.instagram.com/p/CdvBIVzNu1o/)
If your son loses his student card then please be sure to cancel the card immediately to prevent further loss, this can be done online at https://allxs.co.za or on WhatsApp: +27 66 472 8657.
I trust that our boys will keep their commitments to their hockey and rugby teams during the examinations - training times will be reduced and it will be good for the boys to maintain balance during this exam period. We would like to have the whole school's support for our Founders' Weekend Winter Sports Fixture on the 4th of June.
We encourage all our boys to audition for the Abernethy House play, which will be starting rehearsals next term.

I told the boys about a tattoo that one of the matric boys got a number of years ago that stated: "Nothing changes if nothing changes". The purpose of this tattoo was to remind himself that if he wished to change the results, he would have to change his preparation.
I challenged the boys to spend 45 minutes more preparing for each exam than they would have done previously, or, alternatively, spend an additional 45 minutes once they reach the point where they think they are ready. I also shared some simple advice with the boys on how to approach the upcoming examinations:
Take two hours off after every exam to do some exercise and relax.
Stick to a routine of studying for 45 minutes and then having a 15-minute break.
Study without a cell phone in the room.
Get 8 hours of sleep every night before an examination.
I would encourage you to discuss these points with your son and help him create and stick to a plan for the upcoming examination period.
Lion Heart Awards
Congratulations to the following boys:
Thando Mahlangu - Released a song on sound cloud (https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/kkMFV)

Reminders
If your son is absent, please email his tutor.
If your son requires an early departure, please email me.
Please do not send your son to school if he is too sick to attend school.
A boy may not come to school to write a test and then leave immediately after the test.
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
Notices
To reduce the number of late arrivals we have implemented a counting system that will issue a Friday detention to boys who arrive late five times in one term. Kindly ensure that your son is in time for registration to start strictly at 7:30.
It is school policy that boys who are sick may not come to school only to write a test and then leave. If your son is too sick to come to school and stay for the whole day when he has a test to write, then keep your son at home and send a doctor's note to the relevant teacher. The sanatorium sisters are the only people who may send a boy home for health reasons once he is at school.
Please ensure that you return the supervised study letter by tomorrow if you have not done so already.
Kindly complete the following link if you (or your son) wish to attend the address with Stephen McGown on Sunday evening: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScZRL-Gd4MCz7JN0jbMyyBrGdvc05maX5gHKYmmk5pVXgXN1w/viewform?usp=sf_link

I encouraged the boys to be more proactive, specifically when it comes to the reward system: I suggested that they build up some positive points to keep in store for the odd occasion when they do make a mistake. However, they should strive to be proactive in their studies, health and personal relationships by learning to use the time and resources that they have available without needing a deadline to "motivate" them. Being proactive also means learning to resolve issues before they become problems.
The exams are now two weeks away and the boys should be making use of the extra lessons and time that they have available to prepare their study notes. I would encourage you to discuss the upcoming examinations with your son now to help him find ways to be proactive in his approach.
Lion Heart Awards
Congratulations to the following boys:
Asande Mchunu - competing at the national level for Motor Cross Racing and placing in the Top 10 over the holidays.
Andre Duvenhage - selected for the provincial team for indoor cricket
Vuyile Mgudlwa - 98% for his maths test
Nkateko Vukela - making a positive contribution to the reward system by suggesting a way to promote accountability within the form one group
Thank you
We would like to thank Mrs Carol Nuga for donating the first 100 badges that are handed out with the Lion Heart Awards. I have attached a picture of the badge. There are a number of other badges that we would like to have made, please contact me if you would like to contribute.

We were privileged to be addressed by Micheil Cross (School House Class of 2016) today. He captained the 1st Rugby Team in 2016 and shared some of the trials and tribulations that he has experienced both on and off the field since leaving school. His message was a simple one: you are never too good to go back to basics.
The Form Is handled the formalities with Liam Verster proposing the vote of thanks, Joshua Truter presenting the reading and prayer (from memory!), Victor Louw presenting the Lion Heart Awards and Stephan Jonker reading the notices.
I hope that you will have a peaceful weekend and get the chance to enjoy some family time.

All boys must have student cards, new cards can be ordered at this link: http://www.allxs.co.za/card-order/. I have attached a Parent Guide to the allxs portal.
The outreach initiative this term is for blankets and jerseys - please support this initiative and speak to your son about giving to those less fortunate than themselves.
The mid-year examinations are around the corner and the extra lessons offered by the school remain the best resource for those boys who wish to improve their marks.
Message
I encouraged the boys to take pride in managing their own affairs and be truthful when relaying information to their parents and teachers. I told them that they need to learn to resolve their own issues: rather than expecting (or asking) their parents to send an email, they should approach their teacher, coach, tutor or housemaster personally.

Dylan van der Merwe (Abernethy Class of 2018) addressed the lions in house assembly this morning and shared his experiences and view that "change is inevitable, but growth is optional".
The Form IIs handled the formalities with George Zwane proposing the vote of thanks, Lemogang Mfoloe doing the prayer and Kgosi Lefifi reading the notices.
Lion Heart Awards *
Juan Schutte - new personal best of 150 kg deadlift
Ryan Halvorsen - first cap for U 16 A Rugby against Jeppe
Yabsira Dejene - 100% for his Further Studies Maths test
Nolan Burnard - giving back to the community by coaching U11 rugby at TUKS
Munya Makirimani - turning around from a poor start to the year to the extent that his teachers have commented on his excellent work ethic and manners
* We would like to have custom button badges made to give our boys to commemorate these Lion Heart Awards - these will not be worn on the uniform, but rather on kit bags, etc. I have attached a draft of the design and found a supplier (https://button-badges.co.za/) who can produce 100 badges for R246. If you would be willing to give towards some of these badges, please contact me.
We would like to wish all the mothers a happy Mothers Day: thank you for all that you do for your sons, they do appreciate you and will get better at showing it!

Dear Abernethy Parents
We are making a concerted effort to get the boys who scored below 50% to attend the extra lessons offered by the school and we would appreciate your support in this regard. Kindly consult the attached extra lesson schedule that Mrs Botha compiled for us and follow up with your son on whether or not he attends his lessons on a daily basis.
Mrs Vlag addressed the house in house assembly today and spoke about the tradition of being given the keys on one's 21st birthday. She mentioned that this is her 21st year at Pretoria Boys High School (and in Abernethy House) and that this school has been the key to her happiness and success, but that every boy who attends this school is given the key (opportunity) to create his future and must make the most of the opportunities this school provides.
Please see the attached arrangements for the 3rd of May.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
I was very impressed to be approached by one of our matric boys, Ross Barnard, this morning, who asked me to remove the credits that were erroneously awarded to him donating blood last week. I relayed this story to the house this morning, as this is exactly the type of young man with integrity that we aim to produce in Abernethy House and Pretoria Boys High School.
Ryan Bouwer addressed us in house assembly this morning. He shared the story of how he went from leaving varsity before graduating to being a part of the construction of the St Helena Airport. His message was about the path less travelled and learning to define your own success. (https://www.instagram.com/p/Ccm9Vg4Nx-X/)
I have attached the Term 2 Test Schedule together with the Extra Lesson Schedule for this term. Extra lessons are now compulsory for boys who scored below 50% for one of these subjects in the first term. Kindly ensure that your son understands the importance of rectifying his results immediately.
I addressed the issue of boys taking responsibility for their own lives and learning to try and resolve issues on their own. I encouraged them to personally address issues as they arise and always ensure that each person's expectations are clearly understood. I would encourage you to discuss what your son expects of himself when it comes to his studies and involvement at Pretoria Boys High School.
We received a 17% (47/274) response to the Newsletter Feedback Form sent out last week; thank you to those of you who took the time to respond. I will use your feedback to improve the communication within the house.
Our primary form of communication is via email; please do not contact me or any of my tutors on their personal phone numbers. The parent WhatsApp groups (links below) are optional and only used to share general reminders. All formal communication will be via email.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
We were fortunate to be addressed by Rajesh Pasungili from Resolute Robotics in house assembly today. He shared his story and emphasised the importance of being open to change. (https://www.instagram.com/p/CcU5udHtBgc/)
I have attached a combined extra-lesson schedule to this email; these lessons are offered by subject professionals who have experience with the syllabus and how it is examined. I cannot stress the value of these lessons enough and I encourage all boys who scored below 60% for any of these subjects in the first term to make consistent use of this free resource.
We are promoting independence and self-reliance and I encouraged boys to take responsibility for their studies by attending the extra lessons offered at the school and contacting their teachers themselves in the event that they have a query or if they are going to be absent.
I have been frustrated this week to learn how few boys are fully involved in the extra-mural programme at this school. I addressed this with them this morning and explained that what sets Boys High apart is the holistic education that we offer through our extensive extra-mural programme. Please discuss the importance of holistic growth with your son and encourage him to take advantage of all that this school offers:
https://boyshigh.com/school-life/cultural/
https://boyshigh.com/school-life/sport/
We have been wondering about the value of these weekly newsletters and hope that you can take 15 seconds to complete this feedback form:
I hope that you will enjoy the long weekend and I hope that there will be plenty of opportunities for your family to connect.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Reminders
If your son is absent, please email his tutor.
If your son requires an early departure, please email me.
Please do not send your son to school if he is too sick to attend school.
Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this mail finds your well and that you were able to enjoy some quality time with your son(s) during the holiday.
Although the reports published at the end of last term were only preliminary results, they should have given you a good idea of where your son stands. I would like to propose the following course of action, if you are unhappy with your son's performance:
Encourage your son to make use of the extra lessons offered by the school (see the attachments) - the teachers offering these lessons have experience in how each section is to be taught and, importantly, how it is examined. I have attached the updated English and Maths extra lesson schedules and will share those for Afrikaans and Physical Science as soon as they become available. I have also attached my personal views on private tutors, for your information.
We made the following academic awards in house assembly based on the Preliminary 1st Term Results; these results can be seen at the bottom of this email. I highlighted the following about our top achievers:
Position
Name
Average
Involvement
1
Name: DU PLESSIS, Jean-Prieur
Average: 91.67
Involvement: 15A Water Polo, 16B Hockey, Business Club
2
Name: KUFAKUNESU, Takura Nigel
Average: 90.63
Involvement: 1st Basketball Team, Public Speaking
3
Name: JOVANOVIC, Luka
Average: 88.60
Involvement: 1st Tennis Team, 15A Water Polo
This level of involvement fairly common across the top achievers and I believe that this is because these boys learn to manage their time and focus more effectively through their involvement in multiple spheres of school life. I challenged the rest of the house to stop using their studies as an excuse for not being involved or physically healthy and aim for small but consistent improvements throughout the year.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens

Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you and your family well.
I would like to thank the form four group and Mrs Nel for putting the market day together and, in particular, Groenkloof Slaghuis and the Exter family with Spout Coffee Company for their generous donations that made Abernethy House able to collect R7570 for charity!
The boys were issued with their reports today (the uncollected reports can be collected from reception); kindly complete the return form and send it back to school with your son on the 5th of April. I would encourage you to discuss these results with your son and start implementing changes immediately, so that we can hit the ground running in the second term.
I have been very pleased to see the way in which the boys have embraced the Abernethy Point System this term and I encouraged them to use the holiday to "get ahead" by doing something healthy, like reading a book or going for a run.
I would like to thank the Abernethy Staff for the way in which they have gone above-and-beyond to help your sons and serve Abernethy House in the past term.
Finally, thank you, the parents, for your support of me and my team throughout this term - the boys and house are a work in progress and we appreciate being able to work with you to help your son(s) find their way. I trust that you will enjoy the time with your sons at home and hope that you will dedicate time to strengthening your family relationships.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
Our focus for IH Cross Country last Friday was on participation and attitude and I can proudly state that we exceeded expectations on both fronts:
Abernethy House had 154 runners (out of 170) and the house with the next most runners was 137!
The goal was to have all our runners finish in under 33 minutes and we had all but 19 of our boys reach this target!
As a result of our participation figures and the excellent attitude that almost every boy demonstrated Abernethy comfortably took 4th position in both the senior and junior events. These two 4th place finishes gave us a combined score of 8, where the next best day house had a combined score of 13. (https://www.instagram.com/p/CazHf_3t00h/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link)
I am very proud of the whole house and we are all very grateful to Fabio de Sousa and Mrs Bouwer, who offered up their time to manage the house runs in preparation for this event. I would also like to congratulate Mrs Thompson, Mrs Bouwer and Mr Nixon for the excellent example that they set by running with the boys on Friday; we are very fortunate to have such dedicated staff in Abernethy House.
The house goal for 2023 is to grab a top 3 position - this would be a first for a day house. It is possible if every boy in the house commits to staying healthy and active for the next twelve months.
We are very excited to have started the winter sport season on Monday this week and I would encourage you to have a conversation with your son about his involvement in this school; it is our extra-mural programme (17 sports and 38 cultural activities) that sets Boys High apart and it is such a shame to see boys pass through this school without exploring the possibilities and finding their place in the sun.
Thank you for your continued support of me and my tutors - we appreciate it immensely!
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this email finds you well.
We were very fortunate to have Mr Nixon address the house in house assembly this week. He spoke about his experiences while pursuing a career as a musician and the disappointment that he had to deal with when a medical condition forced this career to end. He used his experiences as an example of the various chapters (and challenges) in life that the boys have to look forward to and the importance of hard work and being kind to oneself on this journey.
Mrs Bouwer quoted a portion of The Climb by Miley Cyrus and a bible reading that tied in perfectly with Mr Nixon's message to emphasise the idea that life is more about the journey and the challenges we face than the outcomes and our achievements.
We are very grateful to these two for the effort they put into preparing this message; I have attached Mrs Bouwer's readings to this email.
Tomorrow is the annual inter house Cross Country race and we have set two goals for this event:
We aim to have the highest percentage of boys participating out of all the houses.
We would like to have every boy finish the route in under 33 minutes - this equates to a brisk walk for 4.4 kilometres.
I look forward to seeing our boys accept this challenge with the right attitude and give of their best as they aim to beat the person they were yesterday.
I have been very pleased to see our boys taking ownership of the house; they have done a superb job in organising the IH Cricket teams (thanks to Juan Schutte and Andre Duvenhage), the Abernethy Afternoon (thanks to the Spirit Portfolio) and the Form 4 Market to be held on the 17th of March (thanks to Mrs Nel and the Form Fours). I encouraged the rest of the house to get involved in a portfolio and start making their mark on the house and the school.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Notes
If your son is absent, please email his tutor.
If your son requires an early departure, please email me.
Socks worn with the summer uniform must fit just below the knee.
Please do not send your son to school if he is too sick to attend school.
Dear Abernethy Parents
Thank you to those of you who attended the new parents' braai - it was a lovely afternoon and very nice to start getting to know you. (https://www.instagram.com/p/CaW1i1-t4vA/)
We were very fortunate to have Helen Barrett address us during house assembly yesterday. She competed at Wimbledon and the Italian open at the age of 18 and went on to win the South African championships and represent South Africa on the tennis court. She shared a motivational message that encouraged the boys to dedicate themselves entirely to the pursuit of some goal they choose and then to maintain a positive outlook on life under all circumstances. I am very grateful to Mrs Thompson, her daughter, for arranging this address for us.
The form ones did house assembly today: Chad Donkin did an excellent job with the vote of thanks to the speaker, Lukiyan Sakharov read a lovely passage, Joshua Ngonyama did the prayer and Owami Jacobs read the notices superbly.
We are working hard to get every boy in the house involved and I would encourage you to have a discussion with your son about his involvement at this school. Our extra-mural programme is what sets this school apart and I believe that every boy can find a place where he fits in here.
We are looking forward to seeing what the Spirit Portfolio has prepared for the Abernethy Afternoon today from 14:30 to 17:00!
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this email finds you well.
I started house assembly this week by singling out two of our staff members for their contribution toward the success of this house:
Mrs Botha - she is the pastoral care tutor for Abernethy House and works tirelessly to assist our boys academically; her interventions range from regular individual meetings in which she discuses each boy's future with him to providing boys with study skills and additional resources to assist them in their studies. Every single boy in Abernethy House passed in 2021 and this is in large part a result of her hard work!
Mrs Bouwer - she is a reserve tutor for Abernethy House and has fully involved herself in the point system by assisting in the allocation of points for physical activity and attending extra lessons and actively looking for more ways to reward our boys for positive behaviour and good habits.
Although a great deal of their work is done behind the scenes, we are all very fortunate to have them in Abernethy House and appreciate their efforts!
There have been a number of incidents involving the misuse of social media at the school in the past few weeks and Mr Illsley prepared a presentation for our tutors to present during tutor period this week. I have attached this presentation, for your information, and would encourage each of you to have a discussion with your son(s) about social media and the potential dangers thereof.
The form fours have started leading through the portfolio system in the following ways this week:
The academic portfolio has been offering homework support after school for any boys who need assistance; see the attached document for more information.
The sport portfolio has started preparing team lists and training times for the upcoming inter house events: squash, basketball, cricket and water polo.
The spirit portfolio has been hard at work planning the Abernethy Afternoon on Friday the 25th of February where there will be various games and competitions followed by a braai.
The public relations portfolio has been taking photos and preparing posts for the abernethy_house Instagram account.
The outreach portfolio continues to promote the drive for stationery, bread tags and bottle caps - please send any donations to school with your son.
The purpose of this point system is to promote positive behaviour and create a more forgiving system for the occasions when boys do make mistakes. All boys are expected to earn 10 points per week by exhibiting healthy behaviours (reading, exercise, outreach, attending extra lessons, etc.) or through involvement in the school (sports practices, cultural meetings, supporting, etc.). The majority of the house has bought into this system and appreciates the fact a single mistake (arriving late, forgetting to shave or polish shoes) does not immediately result in a detention. The number of ways in which boys can now earn points continues to increase.
We have placed limits on the number of points that can be earned for various activities because we believe boys should be well-rounded and earn points from a range of activities. I would encourage you to have a discussion with your son about this system, as it does give an indication of his level of involvement; you can view the most up to date point scores here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qIQTpVQByGAxhXI13mo7GFBC4KcPE5zxphjkambvt5k/edit#gid=0
I continue to remind the boys of the importance of managing their own affairs and solving their own problems - please give your son chance to solve his own problems before you step in on his behalf.
Have a lovely weekend!
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Reminders
Kindly email your son's tutor when your son is not at school, as it is the tutor who will issue him with an absentee note upon his return.
Kindly email me at least 24 hours prior to an early departure so that I can arrange an early departure slip.
Upcoming Events
19 February - F1 and 2 New Parents' Braai
25 February - Abernethy Afternoon from 14:30 to 17:00
1 - 3 March - IH Cricket
4 March - IH Cross Country
15 - 16 March - IH Squash
17 March - IH Basketball & Water Polo
Dear Abernethy Parents
We are incredibly proud of the Abernethy boys who claimed subject prizes, colours and a dux scholar title at the academic assembly last week; these achievements will be shared on the Abernethy Instagram account (https://www.instagram.com/abernethy_house/), which is run by our Public Relations Portfolio.
In an attempt to give the boys more experience speaking in public and to allow the house to get to know each other better, we have a different form group take house assembly each week; this means that they are responsible for a message, a reading and the reading of the notices. It has been great to hear the messages that the boys share and Vusi Hlubi, a form three boy, gave an exceptional address today - the content was excellent and the delivery superb! I have attached a copy of this address.
Each week we have a boy from our form four group present a message entitled "1% Better" to each form group during registration; I have attached Cristiano Baptista-Rosa's message that he delivered last week.
This week saw a further expansion of the Abernethy Point System - boys are now able to earn points for reading, running, outreach, cycling, attending extra lessons and participation in any school activity. The boys that buy in to this system appreciate it because it allows them to earn points for positive behaviours and habits and these points then allow them some lee-way when they do make a mistake. There are some boys who have not made the most of the opportunities offered by this system and I reminded them today that this system is designed to work for them: those who do not benefit from it are not getting involved in all that this school, and house, has to offer.
I addressed the house during house assembly today on the importance of standing up for themselves and taking responsibility for their own actions; I encouraged them to attempt to resolve all issues on their own, before having their parents step in for them. I believe that this is how we will teach our boys to become independent young men and I hope that you will allow them to "fight" their own battles before stepping in for them.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I hope this mail finds you well; I have spent the past week in isolation because my wife tested positive for Covid, but she and our daughter (due in March) have recovered well and I was fortunate to be able to return to work today.
We are optimistic about the Covid-regulation changes that were announced last night, however these changes can only be implemented at school once they are made official in a Department of Education Gazette; please continue to follow the procedures outlined in the letter sent out last week (attached).
We have been pleased to see more boys getting active and forming healthy habits by completing their house runs; please continue to encourage your sons to get involved in this initiative.
There are a number of documents attached to this email:
The test schedule for term 1. Your son was given a copy of this last week - encourage him to take responsibility for his studies this year and use this schedule to prepare timeously for upcoming assessments.
The support structures for 2022. This document gives the days and times of the extra lessons offered - encourage your son to take advantage of these resources from the start.
A note on supervised study. This is a venue that is made available to our boys to allow them to use the free time in the afternoons more productively to free up time in the evening.
An invitation to the PA AGM.
A pre-season hockey information document.
Thank you for all your kind words and support - we strive to give your sons a foundation on which to build and can only do this by working together.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens

Dear Abernethy Parents
The inter-house gala that was held last Friday night was a wonderful event and the Abernethy boys can be proud of their performance in and out of the pool; I was particularly pleased with the way in which our matrics led the house. We do hope that the next event will allow parents to share the experience.
The house runs and credit system were introduced in Abernethy House last week - the task was for every boy to run a total of 8 km through the course of the week, either by recording their run on Strava or by running with a prefect after school. There were 47 boys who completed or exceeded this task last week; those who did not complete the task have been given until the end of this week to rectify this. I would encourage you to discuss this system with your son and motivate him to make use of this to start forming healthy habits.
I would like to provide some clarity (and one correction) on our communication channels in this house:
A correction to last week's email: All early departure requests must be sent to me at this address, preferably 24 hours before the required departure time. Kindly see the attached picture for a full explanation.
For subject or sport specific queries you are advised to contact your son's teacher or coach directly, a full list of staff email addresses is available here: https://boyshigh.com/contact-us/
For general queries relating to your son's life at Boys High please contact his tutor. The tutor will escalate any of these issues to me, if need be, or direct you to someone who is better able to assist, if we cannot.
For specific queries or concerns about your son's wellbeing please contact me.
The Abernethy Men WhatsApp group is used for communication of daily notices and information with the boys.
The Parent WhatsApp groups are used for general reminders.*
Most importantly, we are trying to educate independent young men and so we encourage the boys to make their first attempt to solve a problem on their own, by speaking to their teacher, coach, tutor or housemaster before asking someone else to help them.
The portfolio system has officially started and the grade 11s are doing the initial setup before each portfolio is opened to the house. The current list of portfolios includes: academic, sport, culture, outreach, public relations and house spirit. The PR portfolio is to be commended on their management of the Abernethy House Instagram account (abernethy_house).
Here is a reminder of some upcoming events:
Friday 28 January at 17:00 - Form 1 Parents Bring and Braai
Friday 4 February at 17:00 - Form 2 Parents Bring and Braai
Thursday 3 March - Inter-House Cross Country
Kind regards

Dear Abernethy Parents
Thank you for your responses to my previous email - I really appreciate your encouragement and support!
We are very excited to be having the Inter House Gala on Friday this week, unfortunately our parents will not be allowed to attend on account of the limit of 2000 people at an outdoor gathering under the current restrictions.
The social outreach society is doing a drive for stationery for the underprivileged - please consider contributing towards this good cause.
I have attached an image explaining the sanatorium procedure and the times for extra English lessons for this term. Please take note of the correct process to follow in the event that your son needs to leave school before the end of the school day:
Email your son's tutor (and cc me) more than 24 hours before the scheduled departure and include the date, time and reason for early departure.
We will notify you that the early departure has been approved.
Your son must go to reception on the morning of the departure to get the early departure note that will allow him to leave class and the property.
Your son should keep the early departure note to explain his absence to his teachers upon his return.
I have created a WhatsApp group for each form's parents that the tutor and I will use to share additional information with the relevant groups; I would however like to make the following clear regarding these groups:
These groups will only be used occasionally to share supplementary information - all important communication from the school will still happen via email and please continue to communicate with us via email.
These groups will only allow admins (housemaster and tutor) to send messages.
This group is optional to join - by joining this group you consent to having your name and cell phone number visible to other members of the group.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
Dear Abernethy Parents
I trust that this email finds you well and wish you and yours all the best for 2022!
Please see the attached welcome letter and some information about the Abernethy Staff and Prefects as well as the house structure for 2022.
I would like to share some of the areas of focus for me as the new Senior Housemaster of Abernethy House:
Communication
My team and I will always communicate with you and your son(s) effectively to ensure that we are all on the same page when it comes to upcoming events, expectations of our boys (and parents) and any personal issues that may arise; we ask that you communicate with us in the same way.
I will generally communicate with you via email or telephonically and make use of WhatsApp to share information with your son(s). Please ensure that your son is on the Abernethy House WhatsApp group by sharing the following link with him: https://chat.whatsapp.com/HxBpQOSqWL2EpAPyskYH6Y
Healthy habits
We believe that healthy habits create good men and it is with this in mind that we have a credit system in Abernethy House that aims to reward and promote good behaviour until it becomes a habit.
I will be sharing more information on this system with the house in the coming weeks, but we have already set up a running group on a free app called Strava on which we have been posting weekly challenges and rewarding boys for staying active over the holiday period; I would like you to encourage your son to join this group (if he has not done so already) by clicking the following link: https://www.strava.com/clubs/995738?utm_source=com.whatsapp&utm_medium=referral
The purpose of this group is not to produce elite athletes, but rather to encourage all of our boys to maintain balance by staying physically active.
Independence
We aim to create independent young men in Abernethy House and do this by encouraging each of them to take responsibility for an aspect of the house. This is done through a portfolio system that is managed by the boys and allows every boy to find an area of interest and make a mark on the house while learning about leadership and management.
These are the three most important items that I would like you to be aware of and I will share more information on each of these through the course of the year.
Please take note of the following day-to-day reminders:
On time is a sign of respect – please ensure that your son is dropped off at school with enough time to get into his registration venue by 7:30.
Your son’s appearance matters – please ensure that his hair is cut in accordance with the school code of conduct and that his uniform is always neat.
Involvement promotes growth – the only way to get the full “Boys High Experience” is by getting involved in both spheres of the extra-mural programme (sporting and cultural).
I look forward to working with you to help make your son’s experience at Boys High an enriching one that gives him the tools he needs to prosper in life after school.
Kind regards
Craig Stephens
