Family & Consumer Science Course Offerings
This course is designed to be a thorough and methodical introduction to the world of culinary arts. In this course, students will gain hands-on experience in preparing and serving foods, using a wide variety of ingredients and cooking methods. By the end of this course, students will have the skills and knowledge to cook food on a daily basis.
This course will explore nutrition and how to cook and bake healthy. Students will learn genetic health concerns, what is considered healthy foods and their effect on maintaining a healthy body. Students will take an active role in gardening. This course will be offered in 2024-25 and alternating years there after.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Foods
In this course, students will use existing culinary skills and knowledge in a real-world, creative outlet. Students will have the opportunity to make dishes from around the world, participate in Food Network-style competitions, and create food for creating events. Students will also learn about and demonstrate kitchen safety and sanitation skills, proper food storage and serving techniques, and menu planning.
Prerequisite: Introduction to Foods
This course will explore the food, culture, customs and history from various countries. The countries studied depend on the cultural background of the class. Students will build on the food preparation skills developed in Intro to Foods and explore the more complicated procedures of preparing fine cuisine. This course will be offered in 2025-26 and alternating years thereafter.
This course will provide students with the opportunity to explore various architectural styles and principles of interior decorating. Students will plan homes, floor plans and develop a portfolio for the interior of the home. Students will also have the opportunity to complete projects relating to home accessories.
This course will provide students with the opportunity to study human development. Students will examine the various stages of personal growth and developmental psychology. A focus will be placed on the development of human beings from infants to adolescents. The importance of an individual’s self-esteem and relationships with others will be stressed. Be prepared to read books, play games and design activities for children of all ages at local childcare centers and schools.
(Unified Independent Living Skills for Life ~ A peer model approach to independence)
This class guides students in the development of independent life skills. It utilizes a peer coaching model approach to independence, and is geared toward students who are interested in professions that support others. Students with intellectual/developmental disabilities will be paired with peer support partners who are reliable and self-motivated, with a strong ability to take initiative and engage actively with their partners. This class focuses on simple housekeeping, pre-vocational skills, meal prep, clean up, social participation skills and lifetime leisure activities.
This course can be taken more than once.
