B.E.S.T. Course Offerings
B.E.S.T. 9 is a one-credit course in Bow High School’s integrated health and physical education program (B.E.S.T.). This course develops student skills necessary to become nationally certified in Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and First Aid. A major focus of this course will be managing emergency situations and the prevention of disease transmission (including HIV and other pathogens). This course also emphasizes personal fitness, focusing on cardiovascular fitness, body composition, flexibility and muscular strength and endurance. Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of methods to maintain or improve physical fitness. Nutrition education will focus on understanding current dietary recommendations, healthy eating habits and making sensible food choices. Students will be involved in team-building activities with our teachers and will work with our School Counseling Department at the beginning of the school year and during course selection time.

B.E.S.T 10 is the second one-credit course in Bow High School’s integrated health and physical education program. This course emphasizes healthy relationships and personal and social responsibility. Students study reproductive anatomy and physiology, sexually transmitted diseases, and prevention of teenage pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. Throughout the unit, students will engage in activities that recognize and promote the importance of self-respect within relationships. The drug and alcohol unit will focus on teaching students the physiology of addiction while emphasizing the dangers of adolescent experimentation. Students will engage in various initiatives, which will promote the value of having a positive self-esteem and self-concept throughout their lives. In addition, students will focus on the connections between self-worth and substance abuse in today’s society. The School Counseling Department will work individually and with groups of students on course selection as they prepare for junior year.

This class will focus on team sports and competitive methods of maintaining and improving overall health and wellness. The focus of these activities will be to continue to develop and refine the student's existing skills as team participants to prepare them for activities they can participate in as they enter adulthood. A focus of this course will be communication, cooperation and proper sporting behavior and etiquette. Activities may include: flag football, floor hockey, basketball and team handball.

In this course students will gain an understanding of the role of nutrition in health and wellness. This course emphasizes an understanding of today’s food and eating trends and gives students a greater understanding of their own health. Ultimately, students will be given the opportunity to have the necessary skills to plan, purchase and prepare nourishing meals and to evaluate and improve their day-to-day food choices.
This semester-long course is designed to introduce students, safely and accessibly, to the basic postures, breathing techniques, and relaxation methods of yoga. Students will begin to experience the benefits of stretching, moving, and breathing freely as they relieve built up stress, learn to relax, and ultimately get more out of day-to-day life. The aim of this course is to promote vibrant health, reduce stress, and to tap into the body’s latent energy reserves.

Muscular strength and endurance are important components of physical fitness. In this course, students will learn concepts and techniques to improve muscular fitness. Using body weight, free weights and other resistance methods, students will participate in a structured program of exercise stressing proper technique and consistent routine effort. This class will lay the groundwork for more advanced strength and sport fitness training.
**Vigorous effort will be expected regardless of after-school sports participation.

This offering is an activity/fitness based course.
This class will focus on more advanced strength training methods to improve health, athletic performance and reduce injury risk during physical activity. Students will apply standard principles of conditioning and demonstrate proper technique during structured exercise sessions. Methods of improving skill-related fitness components such as agility, power and coordination will also be utilized. Advanced students will explore fitness program design, and adapt sessions to meet their specific needs. Students will track changes in strength, body composition and other indicators of health.

This class is designed to meet the physical education needs of students with physical and/or intellectual disabilities that need assistance beyond the standard BEST curriculum. Students who have demonstrated outstanding participation and ability in previous BEST classes can develop leadership skills while learning to work one-on-one with students needing special assistance to fully benefit from physical education. Students will work collaboratively on the development of fundamental and specialized skills needed to participate in age-appropriate sports and physical activities in an inclusive manner. Activities may be taken from, but are not limited to the following areas: fitness, individual, team and recreational activities. This course is an excellent opportunity for those looking to pursue careers in education, therapy or working with the special needs population.

This offering is a classroom-based course, with limited physical activity. This introductory course emphasizes basic management principles as they relate to the business of sports. Students are introduced to sports marketing, sports law, sports supervision, sports media, sports ethics, recreational sports management and other related areas. There is an emphasis on developing and improving communication skills. An overview is provided with regard to career opportunities in this field. This course will be offered in 2024-25 and alternating years there after.
This course will explore nutrition and how to cook and bake healthy. Students will learn genetic health concerns, what is considered healthy foods and their effect on maintaining a healthy body. Students will take an active role in gardening. This course will be offered in 2024-25 and alternating years there after.
This course would be centered around basic fishing, fly fishing and ice fishing. Students will be exposed to the conservation aspect of fishing as well as techniques and safe practices to fish in a multitude of different manners. Students will have an opportunity to make their own lures for various types of fishing. Water sports safety will also be covered, specifically kayak and small boat safety. If time allows, boater's education will be offered as well. Conservation, laws and regulations and safety will be a major emphasis throughout the course.
