The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards publishes a website that describes the process and provides a wealth of information about getting certified. This site will also be your portal into the process.
National Board has provided the ATLAS platform which contains sample videos, instructional material, and written commentaries which reflect National Board standards.
Note: Candidates may view these cases while trying to attain National Board certification; however, ATLAS cases currently reflect the National Board certification requirements prior to 2014. They are not examples of videos and/or written commentaries from the current certification process. Having said this, ATLAS can be insightful for candidates to see examples of unedited videos, written commentaries, and instructional materials. They may clarify the need for a clear and concise instructional context sheet, highlight student engagement and learning, and allow candidates to practice identifying descriptive, analytical, and reflective writing needed for National Board certification.
C2, C3, and C4 online support resources are available on this website. The NBCT LT will support candidates with accessing this resource when C2, C3, and C4 online courses begin.
The NEA has a page of resources for National Board Certification, including research on its effectiveness.
Please carefully read the information below regarding reimbursement for the cost of the assessment fees and pay differential:
Reimbursement
1. If you are requesting reimbursement for your certification fees, please print and/or copy your receipts (Proof of Payment) related to the certification process (application and assessment fees). Please scan/attach and email the proof of payment documentation (be sure the documentation includes your name and employee ID#) from NBPTS to Shakera Ford Walker ASAP.
Please note: The reimbursements require a multistep process and are processed through City Hall so it will take some time. Given that, I ask for your patience and will be sure to update you about the status as I receive it. THANK YOU!
4% Pay Differential
When you achieve or maintain (renew) National Board certification, submit the official notification letter (available on the NBPTS website) as well as the PS03 (see attached) and a copy of the official certificate you receive from the National Board. You will likely receive the official certificate sometime in mid-February. It is quite large, so you will have to shrink when providing a copy to the Office of Human Capital (OHC). Please insert "NBCT certification" in the comments section on the PS03.
Once you submit all of the necessary documentation above, OHC will process the PS03 and it will be effective the first of the following month. (i.e. if documentation is received on 2/15, the change will be effective 3/1). If you have questions about this, please contact Maureen Moore in OHC.
You can submit the documentation for the pay differential in a few ways:
Scan and Email the info to EmployeeServices@bostonpublicschools.org
In person with the receptionist in OHC. (Bolling, 4th floor) They will make a copy of your original documents and date stamp.
Mail to OHC, Attn: Employee Services (2300 Washington St. Roxbury, MA 02119)
Please feel free to contact Shakera Wallker if you have any questions or concerns.
Up to 6 graduate credits can be attained through the NBCT process, which can then be applied to reach the next lane in the salary schedule. NBPTS has partnered with the following colleges/universities:
