Matt is currently a junior at Boise State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. Matt has played saxophone for the last ten years of his life, and has taken private lessons under the instruction of both Sandon Mayhew and Rodney Zuroeveste for about half of that time period.
During Matt’s upbringing in music prior to college, he participated in various jazz and symphonic groups, took piano lessons from Alison Bear and has also picked up guitar in his free time. While in high school, Matt was the Center Drum Major for the Capital High School Marching Band throughout his senior year. During his senior year, Matt also participated in an indoor marching band on Mellophone, played first alto saxophone in the Boise State Honor Band, and began writing music for guitar and voice.
Since beginning his studies at Boise State University, Matt has been involved in nearly every ensemble available to him as a saxophone player. Matt has been a member of the “Blue Thunder Marching Band” under the direction of Dr. Joe Tornello for two years, performed in various jazz groups for Dr. Alex Noppe, as well as a jazz combo under the direction of Quinn Van Paepeghem. The Boise State University Saxophone studio has offered Matt many opportunities for chamber music in the form of both the Junior and Senior saxophone quartets under the direction of Rodney Zuroeveste throughout all three years thus far at BSU. Along with being a member of this saxophone studio, Matt has had the opportunity to play on multiple debut performances of new pieces from the Boise State University Composition students on campus. Matt has performed in the “All Campus Symphonic Band” and has thoroughly enjoyed being a member of and currently sitting as the Principle Alto Saxophone player for the Boise State University “Symphonic Winds” under the direction of Mr. Marcellus Brown.
In his little free time throughout the last few years, Matt has been highly involved in the local music scene in Boise, usually playing tenor/alto saxophone in various bands unaffiliated with Boise State University. This has given Matt great performing experiences at “Treefort Music Festival,” all throughout the state of Idaho, as well as Jackson Hole Wyoming, Reno Nevada, and many more. Matt is currently finishing up recording his first album with his band “Lounge On Fire” and is very excited to go on tour with that group of friends and bandmates this summer.
Matt has also been an employee at “Dunkley Music” for the last two years working both as a floor salesman/cashier and most recently starting an apprenticeship under Lisa Larimore, learning how to repair band instruments.
