Sometimes the program you begin is not the best option for you. Below are the most common paths of change within in the materials science and engineering program. Picking the best path for you is important and we are here to support that with several options. If you are considering any of these changes, schedule a meeting with the academic programs manager or program director as soon as possible.
To change to a program outside of the Materials Science and Engineering graduate program, talk about your options with the program coordinators for that field of study - generally this will require a new application to the appropriate graduate program.
All MSE Graduate Degrees are set up in a way to support students transitioning between programs.
All programs (PhD, MS, MEngr) require same entrance exam
All programs require 3 Core Courses (MSE 605, 608 and 618)
All programs require 9 credits of 500 and 600 level STEM courses for the Technical Emphasis requirement
Applications from M.Engr. or M.S. students wanting to pursue a Ph.D. in MSE should be initiated after consultation with the student’s Major Advisor and APM to ensure support and the availability of resources. There are two approaches to application depending on where a student is in the program
If a student 1) Has completed MSE 605, 608, & 618 with a 3.4 or higher combined GPA and 2) has support from an advisor the application to the graduate college can be fast-tracked and will be automatically approved.
Students who have not completed the core classes are subject to a full review to be admitted to PhD program. Applications will require 3 letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and CV (transcripts and test scores have already been received by the graduate college and will not need to be resubmitted).
Sometimes a Ph.D. isn't the right option. If discussions with the major advisor and program leadership lead to this option, a Program Change Request should be completed. Approval from the major advisor and program coordinator are required to make this change.
Graduate Assistantship funding that was granted upon admission to the PhD program is not guaranteed upon change of program.
If a change from the Masters of Engineering to the Masters of Science or the reverse is chosen, a Program Change Request should be completed. Approval from the major advisor and program coordinator are required to make this change.
The Graduate Certificate Programs are designed to feed directly into the Masters and PhD program in Materials Science & Engineering at Boise State. Any classes completed toward a MSE Graduate Certificate will be applied to a degree program in MSE. To transition into a degree granting program, complete the Application through the Graduate College.
