Pathways ensure that students are prepared for success in college and careers in higher wage, in-demand fields. Pathways provide a framework to work with post secondary institutions, businesses, and industries to better understand the knowledge and resources needed to prepare students for life after high school. Students will be able to earn one or more endorsements as part of their graduation requirements. Endorsements consist of a related series of courses that are grouped together by interest or skill set. They provide students with in-depth knowledge of a subject area. Students must select an endorsement in the ninth grade. An endorsement is defined as “a coherent sequence or series of courses” in one of five areas: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Business and Industry, Public Service, Arts and Humanities, and Multidisciplinary Studies. Starting with 2018’s graduating class, the state legislature declared high school endorsements necessary for graduates of the Texas Foundation Graduation Plan. By requiring students to focus their course of study, students attain the knowledge and skills necessary to become college and career ready. This benefits not only students, but Texas’ workforce and our economic future.
