Jo March writes a few pieces of poetry throughout the novel, one about her sister ("My Beth") and another ("In the Garret") in which she remembers the four March sisters as children, each with her own small trunk and filled with treasures, secrets, and the beginnings of their dreams. These trunks, like the “castles in the air” the sisters imagine together, hold the hopes of what their lives might become: travels abroad, fine homes, great art, or astonishing stories.
In our production, the trunks are not only props but the foundation of the world onstage. They open and close to reveal keepsakes, transform into furniture, and carry the stories of the March family across the years. At key moments in the play, they remind us of the girls’ dreams, their growing-up, and the lasting legacy of their love for one another.
By returning to Jo’s image of “four little trunks,” our staging reflects the March sisters’ ability to dream beyond what they have, to imagine castles while living simply and to discover that the truest riches come from family, imagination, and shared love.

Dim with dust, and worn by time,
All fashioned and filled, long ago,
By children now in their prime.
Four little keys hung side by side,
