Statement of Equality

At Bitham Brook Primary School we are committed to ensuring equality of opportunity for all pupils, staff, parents and carers irrespective of ethnicity, religion, gender, disability, belief, sexual identity, age or socio-economic background. We aim to develop a culture of inclusion and diversity in which all those connected to the school feel proud of their identity and ability to participate fully in school life. We strongly believe that everyone has the right to be treated equally and we understand that treating people equally does not necessarily involve treating them all the same. We acknowledge that differences in life-experience, outlook and background, result in differences in the kinds of barriers and disadvantage which people may face. Our policies, procedures and activities do not discriminate but take account of these differences. We tackle discrimination through the positive promotion of equality, by challenging bullying and stereotypes and by creating an environment which champions respect for all. We believe that diversity is a strength which should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn, teach and visit us.

We provide all our pupils with the opportunity to succeed and to reach the highest level of personal achievement. We do this by:

Ensuring equality of access for all pupils and preparing them for life in a diverse society

Promoting attitudes and values that challenge any discriminatory behaviour or prejudice

Promoting spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness through all appropriate curricular and extra-curricular opportunities

Providing opportunities for pupils to appreciate their own culture and celebrate the diversity of other cultures

Seeking to involve all parents in supporting their child’s education

Utilising teaching approaches appropriate for the whole school population which are inclusive and reflective of our pupils. This includes direct teaching including PSHE and assemblies, our commitment to Global Learning and Ambassador programmes, and our developing work on Respecting Rights.

We aim that all pupils and staff at BBPS understand that they have the right to be treated equally with due regard to their needs. They are actively encouraged to understand that they are accepted for the person that they are and that they are valued as such. We aim for each to experience a feeling of belonging.

Each member of the school community is responsible for preventing unfair discrimination or harassment or victimisation which it is within their control to prevent; and challenging or reporting such in appropriate behaviour if it occurs.

Equal Opportunities for Staff

All staff appointments and promotions are made on the basis of merit and ability and in compliance with the law. We ensure that all staff, including support and administrative staff, receives appropriate training and opportunities for professional development, both as individuals and as groups or teams.

Equality in Admissions and Exclusions

Our admissions arrangements are fair and transparent and do not discriminate on the grounds of race, gender, religion, belief, disability and/or socio-economic background
