Girl's Basketball

A1 team girls basketball

By: Morgan Nelson and Sulamithe Isimbi

As we are nearing the end of the girls basketball season, we decided to ask a few A1 girls about their experiences this season. We interviewed Morgan T, Autumn K, and Delani C and this is what they said:

How old were you when you started playing basketball?

Morgan: "I remember playing basketball in preschool, but I started traveling ball in 3rd grade." Autumn: "I started playing in preschool." Delani: I started in preschool as well."

Have you enjoyed practice this year? Explain why or why not.

Morgan: "Yes-mostly. I didn't like doing conditioning but scrimmaging is really fun." Autumn: "Yeah, I agree with Delani." Delani: "Yeah. We worked on a lot of different stuff that pushed us pretty hard. But it was worth it in the games.

How do you feel about the season ending?

Morgan: "I'm a little sad because the season went by so fast. But traveling basketball starts soon, so that is exciting." Autumn: "I'm sad, but I play traveling ball with most of my school teammates so I'm excited for that." Delani: "I'm a little upset but like Autumn said traveling ball is soon so I'll get to see most of my team again."

How do you think you did this season?

Morgan: "Personally, I think I did good, and I think my team did well too." Autumn: "I think I improved a lot over the course of the season, as did my team." Delani: "I think we did pretty good this year."

Finally, what position do you play?

Morgan: "I'm a post." Autumn: "I play guard." Delani: "I'm a guard as well."

We also went to one of the A1 games. The game was against the Wachter Wildcats, one of our biggest competition and rivals, so the game was an interesting one. Here is how it all went down:

We arrived right after the first jump, signaling the beginning of the game. As we walked into the gym, you could feel the tension crackling in the air. At 11:19 left in the first half, the score was 6-3 Horizon. A few minutes later Delani scored, making the score 10-5 us. The crowd was excited and our team got even more fired up than before. Wachter had the ball, but they couldn't get past our aggressive defense. Finally Wachter gave up the ball and it was go time. Cora got fouled and made 1 out of 2 free throws. A couple minutes later Morgan got fouled and made both free throws. At 4:39 left in first half the score is 17-5 us. Autumn shot a 3-pointer but missed it by a hair. Then Payge got fouled, causing us to be in bonus. She made her first shot and her second one. The buzzer blew, signaling halftime. At halftime, the score was 21-9 Huskies. We needed to do our best to maintain our lead, as the Wildcats were going to come back with their claws out. Morgan scored on an inbounds play soon after the beginning of the second half. Delani scored a few minutes later. Wachter scored a while later, making the score 25-13 us. We didn't let them Wildcats faze us though. Delani shot a 3-pointer and made it! Husky fans went wild! But Wachter came back and made a 3-pointer the next play. At 9:40 left of the game, the score was 28-18 Horizon. Wachter went and scored another 3-pointer, causing the Wildcat fans to get some hope of winning back. Their fire was fueled more when we fouled them and they still made the layup. Autumn showed them up by scoring a 3-pointer a minute later. Then Payge also scored a 3-pointer and the Huskies got their fuel back. Fike called a timeout. By then the score was 35-27 us. Right out of the block Autumn blocked a pass from a Wachter girl and got the ball for us. Morgan got fouled and made both shots once again. There was a loose ball and after scrapping for it, Wachter gained possession. By now the game is pretty tight at 37-32 Huskies at 1:15 left in the game. Abby got fouled, then Autumn got fouled as well. A possession later there was a jump ball that went to Wachter. Morgan got fouled at 3 seconds left and made 1 out of 2 shots. The whistle blew and ended the game. We took the W, with the score being 38-32 Horizon. We fought long and hard for that victory and it was well earned. We've got to watch our backs next time, as Wachter will be coming back for sweet revenge.(Note: pictures on bottom are from Horizon vs Dickinson as I couldn't get any pictures from the Wachter game)
