Power-Up Item cards are collectible treasure that can be used to score additional gold, health, XP, or unique advantages over other players and teams throughout the game. They are specifically designed to echo each academic unit of study and correspond with the Unit Guide you'll receive at the start of each new unit.
Once you've completed the first supply collection challenge, players will earn one trading card sleeve each to serve as your personal "Manifest," which you can use to store all of your Power-Up Item cards. Your manifest should be kept in the front of your 3-ring binder at all times, and you may not stack multiple items in a single pocket of your trading card sleeve. This will compel you to consider item value and resource management as new and more powerful cards are introduced into the game with each new unit. If you don't have your Manifest with you in class, you can't use any Power-Up Item Cards that day (pays to bring your materials)!
New cards are added each time a new chapter begins.
To encourage social interaction and team-based brainstorming, Power-Up Item cards can be traded between players at any time outside of class or inside of it (with the Narrator's permission). There are over 200 different Power-Up Item cards available (with new cards arriving every time we enter a new academic unit!), and how you choose to play, collect, or trade away your Power-Up Item cards is completely up to you! And please keep in mind that Power-Up Item cards have no actual cash value in or outside of class, and therefore should never be exchanged between individuals for real currency at any time. It goes without saying, but this is just a game, folks.
There are three types of Power-Up Item Cards:
Most Power-Up Item cards are wildcard items with secret powers that allow players to bend, break, or ignore specific rules of the game when they are played. Power-Up Item cards can be won, lost, traded, and/or purchased for in-game currency. Each card is marked with a RARITY indicator (ranging from most common all the way to mythic), as well as a circled Chapter number (to remind players of what unit of study the item came from). Cards are marked with one of four card suits (♦♣♥♠ ) to reflect what type of player might enjoy them the most, but any Power-Up Item can be played by any player at any time as long as they have achieved the appropriate experience level to do so. Most Power-Up Cards are single use unless otherwise indicated.
Cards marked with a locked padlock are Secret Expeditions. These are bonus side quests that are up to you as the cardholder to share with others or complete entirely on your own. Some Secret Expeditions reward players for getting as many players to complete them as possible, while others compel players to decide whether or not to share their information with friends by forcing them to split whatever reward they earn in the side quest evenly between each of the players who complete that task. Secret Expeditions typically expire at the end of each chapter -- which means that the clock is ticking on how you want to make use of what you've discovered with this card. Will you play as an individual or as a teammate? The choice is up to you!
Think of allies like a collectible set of SUPER BONUS CARDS. Allies are powerful character cards that can be won (or lost) by a player’s game-based actions such as completing a Side Expedition, discovering a hidden location anywhere throughout the game. If a player can collect any four allies at a time, he or she can trade in these four cards at once for a supercharged in-game bonus good for the duration of an entire class period. THESE ARE GAME CHANGERS! When banded together, allies have incredible powers -- offering exclusive in-game hints, surprising combat advantages (like re-rolls of dice and extra turns in battle!), added layers of protection (like the ability to skip a turn or to re-assign turn order), or the ability to inflict mayhem and mischief on rival wagon trains during team-versus-team showdowns. As in real life, the more allies you surround yourself with, the stronger you will become!
