At the start of each new unit, the class will be introduced to the latest chapter of the unfolding Dream Rush narrative. Each new chapter is uniquely themed unto itself, with content-inspired story points driving the game’s narrative throughout to introduce appropriately-themed characters to meet, enemies to challenge, Power-Up Items to collect, and optional rewards for exploring hidden secrets that each particular world has to offer.
These expeditions help introduce players to the setting, stakes, Chapter Boss, and themes that will make this unit spring to life for the duration of our time spent in its confines.
At the start of each Chapter, you'll be presented with at least four unit-specific choice options to explore before that particular unit expires. There are four types of side expeditions: GRIEFERS (clubs), EXPLORERS (spades), SOCIALIZERS (hearts), and ACHIEVERS (diamonds) -- and you may complete any expedition regardless of your player type, but there are hidden performance benefits and streak bonuses for the most daring and intrepid gamers!
Simply select any one of the four side expeditions that most interests you and add it to your electronic portfolio by responding to the prompt with an original web page video of 5 minutes in length OR a blog composition of three paragraphs or more. You'll have until the end of that Chapter to complete whichever expedition you've selected -- though you are absolutely welcome and encouraged to complete additional expeditions for bonus XP. Higher-quality work products or those work products that reflect mastery of a particular unit skill may likewise be rewarded with in-game Power-Up Items, player badges, and treasure.
Bonus Expeditions are standing offers for additional point-scoring opportunities designed to increase student engagement by appealing to player’s desire for creativity, choice, and autonomy. They are the fastest way to score XP, and they are designed to reward intellectual curiosity with increased performance ability and transfer skills. These stand-alone assignments are typically enrichment activities designed to offer players the ability to increase their Status, Access, Power, and Stuff levels while reviewing course content and improving specific skills related to the unit like curating, researching, reflecting, and taking part in community service.
Note: Bonus Expeditions are not extra credit for a grade. Rather, they are enrichment activity practice designed to help a student master particular content, concepts, or skills necessary to improve their performance throughout the class.
Bonus Expeditions function just like side expeditions, but they typically are marked with an expiration date that might correspond to a non-school event (like a holiday break) or an outside organization's deadline (like a scholarship opportunity). These optional side quests are completely free-form ways to rack up massive XP, collect in-game treasure, AND score outside world experience that will ultimately pay off in the form of a better score when you're submitting graded assignments and competing in Boss Battles.
You can likewise score massive streak bonuses for completing the same Bonus Expeditions multiple times throughout the course of the year.
Sometimes, secret links will be hidden in course instructional documents. If you're clever enough to find them, they typically direct you to online hubs with Secret Expeditions or hidden merchants offering Power-Up items at deeply discounted prices. They may be marked with an out-of-place icon, hidden in printed materials as a scannable item, embedded in the class Twitter feed, or printed in white letters than can only be seen when you click and drag over a text. So keep an eye out! You never know where secret expeditions will pop up.
