Hi! My name is Carolyn Rothmann and I am a junior at BU majoring in Environmental Planning with a focus on urban agriculture and conservation. Outside of school, I spend time working at Russell farms market in Vestal During the produce season. We sell fresh produce to the Binghamton, Vestal, and Johnson City areas that are affordable. This job has taught me ways to reduce food waste in the retail marketplace industry. At the Farmers Market, we also made sure that everyone has access to affordable fresh food by accepting food stamps and farmer's checks, which is not very common at the farmers market. Back home in Illinois, I help my cousins on their hemp farm, I have learned various ways that cover crops help the soil composition. I also help my grandmother out on her local livestock farm where I work with the animals and garden. I also have worked with a local program called "Citizens for Conservation" in which we planted trees and native species in the area and cleaned up in local parks.
After School, I am hoping to participate in WOOF somewhere in Europe to continue to learn different ways to farm. The reason I would like to go to another county is that it would be beneficial to get a different perspective on farming. The way people farm in other counties is vastly different than how we do it in America. In the future, I am hoping to apply my ecology skills and my knowledge of farming to the field of urban planning and agriculture to improve the conservation of underdeveloped land and food security in urban areas. I have always been very interested in our natural environment and being outside. I also like working with people so I would love a job where I am outside, interacting with people and the environment.
