Our curriculum is guided by the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage. This outlines the four guiding principles with which our practice in Reception class is shaped:
every child is unique;
children learn through positive relationships;
children learn and develop well in enabling environments;
recognising that children will develop and learn at different rates.
The Early Years curriculum is organised into prime and specific areas:
We place the personal, social and emotional development of our pupils at the centre of our practice, developing non-cognitive skills alongside the more academic. Children will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding set out in the statutory framework through a combination of both play-based learning and more focused teacher-led sessions, such as phonics, maths and reading. We provide opportunities for children to develop a sense of awe and wonder of the world by engaging them in experiences both inside and outside of the classroom. Rich, first-hand experiences, such as visits out into the community, facilitate and extend children’s learning.

It is a statutory requirement that we carry out a baseline assessment on all children in the Reception year. This needs to be completed within six weeks of them starting school and you can read information about it in the document below:
At the end of the Reception year, your child will be assessed against the 17 Early Learning Goals (ELGs). It is important to remember that the ELGs are not a test. Staff will use what they know and what they have observed over the course of the year to reach their judgement. Progress against the ELGs will be reported within the end of year school report.
