Required instruction (including but not limited to lessons, readings, texts, discussions, etc.) is part of our district curriculum, Billings Public Schools continues to follow Senate Bill 99 as well as board policy 2310 procedure 2 which states that when selecting materials, teachers, and administrators must review their content and consider the issues of violence, profanity, prurient subject matter, cultural concerns, and historical accuracy in the selection process. Objections to lessons and/or materials must be brought to the teacher's attention in writing, using the District Alternative Material Request Form. Alternatives may be available within district guidelines. If an objection is submitted, the teacher will then select an alternative option from the appropriate course/grade level guidelines to provide the students with an independent study opportunity as allowed by state law and local policy. The approved reading list, courses, and units of study are available on the District webpage under curriculum.
In addition to the information provided in our textbooks, students will be learning popular songs, watching short videos and reading during each unit. In accordance with Senate Bill 99, I am required to share with you the titles and authors of all books I will use in class. I have listed the books that we will most likely read in class, but sometimes I find new ones that I want to use.
The purpose of reading, listening to music and watching videos is to not only teach vocabulary, but also about culture. These sources also often show some of the unique geographical features of the countries, and incorporate many idiomatic expressions that students can then use in their own work in the classroom. Videos, lyrics and books are screened carefully to make sure that the content is appropriate for a classroom setting.
Once we start learning popular songs, I will list them on this google doc.
All links to the childrens songs and holiday songs and videos will be on the Daily Syllabus (google doc) on Google Classroom

Concluding the topic of materials utilized, the following is district protocol regarding any objections to what is used or taught in class.
Required instruction (including but not limited to lessons, readings, texts, discussions, etc.) is part of our district curriculum. In addition, students may have access to numerous optional resources such as a book club or a teacher's classroom library. Billings Public Schools continues to follow Montana laws which state that parents have the right to request and opt-out for topics of human sexuality, or those that offend the parent's beliefs or practices. Objections to lessons and/or materials must be brought to the teacher’s attention first through a conversation to see if the objections can be resolved by providing more information about the lesson and the intended learning objectives. If after the dialogue an opt-out or alternative is requested, then that request will be submitted in writing using the District Alternative Material Request Form. If an objection is submitted, the teacher will then work with their building principal to select an alternative option from the appropriate course/grade level guidelines to provide the student with an independent study opportunity as allowed by state law and local policy. Those independent study opportunities will be in line to the level (resource, lesson, unit, course) of which the parent is objecting. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your student's teacher and/or principal for more information.
