Great News about the Seal of Biliteracy! Keep Reading!
STAMP TEST Our upper level language students at Senior High School are eligible to receive the Montana Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy is a certificate that states that the recipient has functional language skills that could be used in a variety of settings. This will be very valuable for your child as they head out into the working world. The Seal demonstrates to potential employers that the bearer has enough experience in their second language to communicate with speakers of that language who patronize their businesses. Some universities are using these scores to place students in the appropriate level of the language, and granting them college credit for achieving the Seal of Biliteracy, instead of requiring them to take an AP or CLEP exam.”
Students from all three languages will be taking the STAMP Test in the spring. Recipients of the Seal will be announced at the awards ceremony in May, and the seals will also be attached to their official transcripts.
Senate Bill 99
Required instruction (including but not limited to lessons, readings, texts, discussions, etc.) is part of our district curriculum, Billings Public Schools continues to follow Senate Bill 99 as well as board policy 2310 procedure 2 which states that when selecting materials, teachers, and administrators must review their content and consider the issues of violence, profanity, prurient subject matter, cultural concerns, and historical accuracy in the selection process. Objections to lessons and/or materials must be brought to the teacher's attention in writing, using the District Alternative Material Request Form. Alternatives may be available within district guidelines. If an objection is submitted, the teacher will then select an alternative option from the appropriate course/grade level guidelines to provide the students with an independent study opportunity as allowed by state law and local policy. The approved reading list, courses, and units of study are available on the District webpage under curriculum.
In addition to the information provided in our textbooks, students will be learning popular songs, watching short videos and reading during each unit. In accordance with Senate Bill 99, I am required to share with you the titles and authors of all books I will use in class. I have listed the books that we will most likely read in class, but sometimes I find new ones that I want to use. I am working on cataloging my readers and other resource book on Libib. Once that is done, I will share it with you.
The purpose of reading, listening to music and watching videos is to not only teach vocabulary, but also about culture. These sources also often show some of the unique geographical features of the countries, and incorporate many idiomatic expressions that students can then use in their own work in the classroom. Videos, lyrics and books are screened carefully to make sure that the content is appropriate for a classroom setting.
Any additional books or texts will be sent to you 48 hours in advance.
Once we start learning popular songs, I will list them on this google doc.
All links to the childrens songs and holiday songs and videos will be on the Daily Syllabus (google doc) on Google Classroom
