Strategies

Classroom strategies

Here are a few ways to find success with your ML/ELLs in your classroom.

Build Relationships

Connect with your students. Most important! Newcomers--new ELLs are focusing on building basic English and using languge to connect will encourage them to keep working hard to develop their multi-lingual capabilities at times when it is challenging.

Importance of Relationships

Increase Peer Work/talking opportunities

Time and practice are needed to develop new language skills. Think-Pair-Shares, Turn & Learns, Socaratic Seminars, Circle Chats, etc.

Extra ideas & Resources

Explicitly teach academic language vocabulary

Identify academic language of the content-area lessons & scaffold academic language and vocabulary instruction.

Videos, Blogs & Resources

activate prior knowledge

Get creative--use K/W/L chart, Jamboard,  use relia, picture walks, word walls, classroom discussions, etc.
