Here are a few ways to find success with your ML/ELLs in your classroom.
Connect with your students! This is the most important! Newcomers are focusing on learning basic English and using language to connect will encourage them to keep working hard to develop their multi-lingual abilities at times when it is challenging.
Time and practice are needed to develop new language skills. Think-Pair-Shares, Turn & Learns, Socaratic Seminars, Circle Chats, etc.
Identify the academic language of the content-area lesson & scaffold academic language and vocabulary instruction.
Get creative -- use K/W/L charts, Jamboard, realia, picture walks, word walls, classroom discussions, etc.
*Video was created by an ELL teacher who has ELLs from all over. These strategies can be used in your classroom.
When students first develop language skills, they often develop listening skills first, then speaking, then reading, then writing.
Ideas include: Using sentence/paragraph frames, the Language Experience Approach, Quick Writes, etc.
2 Wait Times for ELLS:
1) When processing oral language
2) When organizing their ideas and words to produce a response
You may be new to teaching ELLs, but your colleagues are a WEALTH of information.
