Education, Philanthropy, and Giving Back to Society
Education, Philanthropy, and Giving Back to Society
Guided by the principle that wealth should be returned to society, Wong devoted considerable energy to public service and philanthropy. From the 1930s onwards, he served as a Director of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and Po Leung Kuk, actively supporting social welfare initiatives. He was also a strong advocate for industrial education, urging the establishment of technical and tertiary institutions to nurture talent for Hong Kong’s growing manufacturing sector—efforts that helped lay the foundations for what would later become the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Wong made significant personal contributions to education. He funded the establishment of the Haking Wong Technical Institute and the Haking Wong Building at the University of Hong Kong, becoming one of the University’s most important early benefactors. Pauline Chan, herself an alumna of HKU, likewise made sustained donations to the University’s Faculty of Medicine, further extending their shared commitment to education and public service.
In his later years, Wong turned his attention increasingly to his ancestral hometown of Xinhui. He supported the construction of schools, bridges, water supply systems, and optical manufacturing facilities, contributing to local development and modernisation. In recognition of these enduring contributions, he was named an Honorary Citizen of both Xinhui and Jiangmen.
