Diligence, Scholarship, and Leadership
In 1923, Haking Wong was admitted to St. Stephen’s College in Pok Fu Lam. He quickly distinguished himself through academic excellence, leadership, and a strong sense of social responsibility, earning the respect of both peers and educators.
In 1924, while still a student, he founded the St. Stephen’s Free School in Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun, providing educational opportunities for underprivileged communities — an early expression of his lifelong commitment to service and social betterment.
Wong’s intellectual interests extended beyond the classroom. He was actively involved in literature and drama, participating in school theatrical productions and performing in two Chinese plays that reflected the cultural life of the campus. During the 1924–1925 academic year, he served on the Social Committee, contributing to the organisation of student activities and the broader life of the school.
A gifted writer, Wong was also a regular contributor to the school magazine, Chimes. His essay “Extend Affection to the People, Extend Benevolence to All Things”. revealed a remarkably mature engagement with ethical thought and civic virtue. In 1926, he was appointed Chairman of the Free School and graduated as Dux of the English Department, receiving a college scholarship in recognition of his outstanding achievement.
