Students learned about American life at the Turn of the Century by researching the major events, inventions, and people that shaped our country. At our entry event, classes took a virtual field trip to Ellis Island for the 'Emigration Experience.' Students are now archiving important information by designing 3D virtual museum. Please enjoy our project artifacts below along with in-progress museum exhibits. Our goal is to teach you, 'The Shape of US!'
SS5H1: Describe how life changed in America at the turn of the century.
ELAGSE5W1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons
ELA5W9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
In Social Studies, the 5th Grade Brigade researched Turn of the Century US history including: cattle trails, inventors, America's involvement in the Spanish America War, the building of the Panama Canal, and why so many people immigrated to the US at this time.
In ELA, students are reading the novel, "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind," by contemporary inventor William Kamkwamba. They will consider what characteristics changemakers possess and explore the concept of being a changemaker in their own communities, country, and world!

In ELA, Students will use the movie trailer for TBWHTW as an inspiration for their own trailer depicting a turn of the century important person or event.
Students learned about each of Africa's four major geographic regions: rainforest, desert, savanna, and the sahel.
