Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the U.N. General Assembly and other multilateral bodies that catapult students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation. In Model U.N., students step into the shoes of ambassadors from U.N. member states to debate current issues on the organization's vast agenda. Student "delegates" in Model U.N. prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the U.N.'s rules of procedures - all in the interest of mobilizing "international cooperation" to resolve problems that affect almost every country on Earth.
Before playing out their ambassadorial roles in Model U.N., students research global problems to be addressed, drawn from today's headlines. Model U.N. participants learn how the international community acts on its concerns about topics including peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development, and globalization. Model U.N. delegates also look closely at the needs, aspirations, and foreign policy of the countries they will represent at the event. The insights they gain from their exploration of history, geography, mathematics, culture, economics, and science will help develop global citizenship in the students of Bowling Green High School.
Our club meets every Wednesday after school from 2:30 to 3:30 in the Library or Madame Kern’s room. Meetings teach useful communication skills and help prepare members for conferences. Some meetings also include mock simulations led by students that mimic the conference dynamic and teach students the behind the scenes aspects of conferences like chairing and being a part of a crisis staff. Etc.
Model U.N. participation promotes student and teacher interest in international relations and related subjects, increases the capacity for students to engage in problem-solving, teaches aspects of conflict resolution, research skills, and communication skills, and creates the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
For over 50 years now, teachers and students have benefited from and enjoyed this interactive learning experience throughout the world. It not only involves young people in the study and discussion of global issues, but also encourages the development of skills useful throughout their lives, such as research, writing, public speaking, problem-solving, consensus building, conflict resolution, compromise, and cooperation.
