Kokedama

Kokedama is a traditional Japanese art form. Koke means "moss" and dama means "ball" in Japanese so kokedama is "moss ball".

The art form came about from seeing extremely root bound plants that naturally formed into root balls when contained in pots. They took these plants, wrapped them in moss and displayed them on ornate dishes or suspended in the air.

Kokedama is done by creating a mud ball, usually with a high clay content to hold the shape, putting the plant's roots into the center of it and then wrapping whole thing with moss. The moss is tied on with string and this string can be used to hang the kokedama.
